IMHO a co-captain situation takes the gloss & status from the position. I still like the romance, the history, the honour boards etc.

I'd give it to Lance solely for the next 3yrs. After this time he will be 30, & more importantly, it can then be given to Murphy at age 21/22?

I guess you've got to ask Sumo,

what devalues and takes the gloss away from the position more? Is it putting it on a teporary rotation, or is it giving it permanently to one of three blokes who don't deserve it?

I see your point - but I think less devaluation occurs under the co-captaincy.

They could end up like the three wise monkeys this way:

Stevo could see no evil
Fev could drink no evil
and Lance could eat no evil

Giving it to any of Whitnall, Stevens or Fevola simply creates a headache a couple of years down the track when we want to take it away from them and give it to one of the young guys.

I'd give it to Wiggo. He's probably the best example you could hope for in everything other than straight out talent and that sort of example is something that's been sadly lacking at Carlton for a long time.

Give me a captain lacking in talent who gives his all week in week out over a super talented cheque collector who looks like he can't be F@%&#! every time he runs out any day.

PS: I'm not joking...

It won't happen, but that's actually not a bad idea.

What about someone like Heath Scotland?

I prefer to have just the one captain. Stevo would be my prefered option if Kouta refuses to go another year. He has been the most consistent player over the past 5 years other than Lappin who is nearing the end.

At 27, and with perhaps four years of AFL left in one of the most talked about bodies in the game, Whitnall won't miss the annual finger-point at his expanded waistline.

"They would talk about that and not talk about my footy and how I was playing."

Well Lance, when you're a supposedly elite player being paid BIG money you're supposed to prepare professionally for the duration of your contract. If you've previously turned up to training in ordinary physical condition a number of times in your 'professional' career and visited a fat farm a number of times in your 'professional' career people will rightly ask questions and doubt your professionalism and committment.
You made your bed Lance....

Great point there however we have to really pay credit to Whitnall that he has turned it around and is trying hard and is also trying hard to set and example NOW, and I do agree it his obligation to be 100% commited as he is a professional athlete in a professional game.

I would make him Captain for a couple of years as we really aint got much else...Stevens is not up to standard as yet and Fev is far too unpredictable to lead our team as captain but as vice captains would slot in there nicely.
In saying this I think both Stevens and Fev have great qualities but being captain full time is a big ask.

All I want Whitnall to improve on from here on in is A) Be more physical and make his presence on the field made felt
B) I would like to see a bit of muscle so he starts looking like an athlete and enough strength to do what is needed.

Also I would like to see the MC play him more in the forward line!

Let's face it whether we like it or not Whitnall will a blue till his career is up. Let's try be proactive rather than being negative and with the talent coming into the team build on it.

2007 will show lot about club on and off the field!!!

I read the heading of that article - Whitnall THROWS HIS WEIGHT behind Fevola. I wouldn't think it was wise for him to being throwing his weight anywhere.

Did you say Whitnall will be at the Blues for three years???

I hope not - surely 2007 will be his last year at the club.

The only value I can see in him is if he stays on the forward line. That backline experiment of "showing leadership" on the backline was ridiculous and easily exploited by the opposition.

eg west coast game - whitnall did ok first half against hansen - so they bring on Hunter to destroy him. Pagan had no plan b for whitnall. too predictable.

It's because our Midfield got smashed!
P-leeeaseee why would 2007 be his last year?
For someone who is not a natural defender did a bloody good job!

Walls thinks that Waite would make a natural centre half back..
I would give it to Sentanta personally. I think he killed Hall in that round 22 match. There is no room for whitnall in defence. One needs players with speed and agility.

It is attack or nothing for Whitnall. I would then trade him at the end of 2007 if he can't deliver the goods. Time is running out for this football club - and the time for sentimentality is over. One more year like this year and you could pretty much write off the club for years to come.

Oh, but with Whitnall's leadership in defence... we should be ok. I forgot.

It would be great to play Waite at CHB. But can Waite play CHB? Question is will Pagan do it so Lance can play in the forward line? A loose role is teh way to go with Lance as he can certainly read and set up the play better than most in our team.

People really do underestimate Whitnall. He was in a lot of people's AA team at CHB, and was in the top 3 IMO for the year. Talk of of 2007 being his last year is just ridiculous.

YEAH, BUT WHAT'S HIS POSITION??

N.B. I believe his position is wherever the coach asks him to play, as I don't think there's many coaches who say, 'Hey Timmy, not sure of your position today ... just pop out there and see where you end up, ok?'
