He did so with strength and his usual superb judgement, which made him, according to Prowess statistics, the league's No. 1-ranked player for both repelling opposition inside-50s, and for intercepting marks.

Whitnall deserves a spot. He could well miss out. But unlucky omissions are always the case in this yearly ritual, more so in an age where even key positions are sometimes indistinguishable from each other.

He is a guy like alot of our players that cant play a frontline position in a game.
The problem is some actually talk about him as if he is Jesus reincarnate.

He is a good ordinary footballer with an unathletic physique and a questionable work ethic.. who has done very well out of our club when it was flying and financially has made alot of money with minimal ouput and cannot.. should not be given a role model position of captain unless its part of a revolving captaincy.

As for his worth.. of course he could make our best 22.. as long as he is protected and out of the front line positions.. because a) he is not as good as the other key positions we have.. in fact Setanta finished the season off better than Lance did as a key defender.. and TBird was the main K defender..

so i ask again.. whats Lances role if he cant take the front line positions and he has to be protected by those around him (mostly kids) to not be exposed???

He should have been trade bait!

Now you're talking.

Don't get too caught up in what Setanta did in the last 2 rounds. If Judd is considered the best footballer in the competition, then why wasn't he BOG in every game? You just can't make those types of comaprisons. There are reasons why one player shines when another doesn't, win or lose.

He's not a saviour, but he has an important role to play in a developing team...he has smarts (no one can deny) and is respected by the kids....sure they're young and impressionable, and he may have done things that both you and I will never know, to earn respect....whatever the case...he has respect, and is considered by most is having a special gift that makes up for his physical deficiencies...footy smarts...something we surely need with such an inexperienced squad.

To me it's not about winning finals in 2007 and 2008, it's about developing the kids, and I believe he can add value there.

Rotating or permanent captain...I don't give 2 hoots. The bottom line for me is 2007, and lets face it what alternative is there for captaincy? Not much.

We can find faults in all the candidates for the captaincy from season 2006: Fevola, Stevens, Lappin, Scotland.......and as for Murphy and Walker, they're too young and they are not Wayne Careys.

So you see, given our present situation we are beggars for captaincy and the choice is not so obvious...that's our predicament. Given this situation it's not absurd to consider Lance as captain, or Lappin, or Stevens, or Fevola...it's just the way it is....and that's not Lance's fault. In a way, he's not necessarily the best captain, but he's surely is in the right place at the right time to be considered for the role.

Fact.

Ok so Judd and Lance can be compared??

Oh i know i can find faults in other candidates... but im not saying anyone in particular should be captain.. if you read what i am saying...

I dont see how Lance can help develop the kids.
He is first off training.. so he never stays back to help the kids. yes he might teach them Footy Theory 101 but he cant do prac with them...because he does not have the passion to stick around... EVER!
He has smarts??..
i want him to have smarts and be a frontliner...
he doesnt have the capacity to be a frontliner so he plays a seagull role..he is always on the blind side waiting to take off ...
he fumbles too much... he is terrible below his knees....
he cant jump and is continually outmarked from behind..
he is terrible in contested open situations ...
his opponents and coaches dont respect him enough to play tightly on him..
he does not protect the kids from playing at fullback or centrehalf back against good opponents....
He is a wide body not a big body.... he has no physical presence...

What is the point????

Lance gets away with murder... because Lance is a father / son.
Lance gets away with murder ... because Lance was in a good Carlton side and we remember that.

His performances since have been been sometimes good but mostly very ordinary.....thats the reality... !!!
Since 2002 (bloody long time) he has been ordinary to poor much more regularly than he has been good or sactisfactory but he has never been MEGA!.... but some people think Lance is a gun....and the word "leadership" is often muttered from their lips.
Its crazytalk to make him captain after what he has shown in the last 5 years... its cheapening the captaincy and its another nail into our very own coffin of mediocrity...

Didn't Lance win the B&F this year?

I admit that Lance was ordinary for three consecutive years (2002-04) however this was partly due to injury and he has since turned things around.

Pay credit where it is due for heavens sake. Lance is the least of our worries at the moment.

Fact is we don't have any obvious leaders who have the experience of 100 games. I know Sticks was made captain after a year but he was an exceptional leader and player who was 22/3 and had been a star in the SANFL when that still meant something. Probably Kennedy and Murphy are our brightest prospects for the future, but we need a captain now and I think Lance is the best option, doesn't mean he is the new Big John, but he is the best available. Despite criticism he has been a pretty consistent player, probably 2-3 poor seasons, partly due to injury. He was described by Britts as a great natural leader, and dare I suggest Britts might have known a bit more about him than any of us. And Fev is a real talent, who has had one stellar season, 2 half seasons and about 6 wasted seasons in his career. At 25 he is not mature or sensible enough to keep out of trouble even when representing his country, and still dosn't do enough of the 1%s and playing FF is a hard place to captain from. I know Fev apologists will bring up Cousins behaviour, but Cousins has been a gun every year for about ten years - idiot off the field, star on it, and his behaviour cost him the captaincy of a premiership. Certainly Whitnall has put his hand up in the off season in a way that Fev hasn't. Let Fev concentrate on repeating 06 for the next 6 years and being seen as a great rather than a wasted talent and let Whit show his leadership for three years when the cycle will have turned and we will have a range of leaders to choose from.

I actually wish we had recruited Sean Og O'hAilpin when he was 19, we might have a great captaincy candidate now

By the amount of enthusiasm and excitement you are expressing it's as if you seen Pamela Anderson naked in your bed?
So what is the point?

Synbad, whilst some people might overstate Lance's importance and what he has been able to accomplish, you are more guilty of grossly downplaying and disregarding Lance's achievements merely because you do not like Lance as a footballer. I actually believe that you don't actually want Lance to do well and are pissed off that his last few seasons have been at worst reasonable. The way you describe him makes him sound like a hack footballer who has been lucky to even play the game at the top level. FFS he has finished in the top 3 in the Best and Fairest three times including a win in 2006, he has been All-Australian, a three-time leading goalkicker. He has been good enough to play 200 games and will (barring injury) play close to 300. You simply don't achieve the above if you're not a bloody good footballer! You say that Lance didn't 'inspire' during his stint as captain this year? Does Kouta 'inspire'? I think Lance is our best on-field leader in terms of directing traffic, telling players where to go etc. But whether or not he would make a good captain is beside the point: Lance is and has been a much better player than you among others give him credit for and part of me thinks deep down you know this but would never say so on here.

Perhaps Synbad is frustrated with what Lance delivers compared to what he is capable of?
I know I have little expectations of him anymore. Give me players who sacrifice and give everything to succeed at AFL football.
I prefer to watch Murphy, Walker and the kids who work their butts off over the pre season and do all the extra stuff to give themselves every opportunity at succeeding.

Lance decides when he wants to turn up fat and lazy or in reasonable condition. It depends if he can be bothered putting in the effort or not.
He does what he needs to at training and plays the same way.
He has the ability to be a topliner in the AFL but he chooses not to.
He does enough to get by and thats it.

I wish him all the best but I'm well past being fooled by his intention. Lance will be remembered as a good footballer when he has the ability to be a champion.

If thats the sort of player we need setting the example to our kids, it shows the depths we've sunk to.
Let Kouta keep the captaincy for the year and hope like hell that one of the younger players shows potential leadership.

no offense to Kouta, who is one of my fav players, but I have not seen him fire up at the players since he became captain, and we've played some shocking football. He is a hopeless captain.

Another year of having somebody leading the club who will not under any circumstances get angry on the field (except maybe once, in a blue this year) is crap. We need someone who will VISIBLY berate the team if they are playing crap football.

Lance at least shows some passion on the field, trys to tell players what to do, and you are talking crap if you say he doesn't do that, (whoever the hell I'm talking to after reading a lot of the oopinions in this thread).

You gotta hope that Lance can pull a ripper year out of the bag, and teach the young kids how to play for the club... cause if you've given up on players like Lance, then we've probably got a couple more years at the bottom.

I'm lucky enough to have a body type that means I can eat crap, do bugger all excersize and still maintain a reasonable amount of fitness.

I have mates who watch what they eat and work their tits off and still look in worse condition than Lance.

Does this mean Kouta is more dedicated than Lance? NO. It means that Lance has to work harder given his genetics to maintain his fitness. Given injuries that limit Lance's ability to train full pace over summer does not mean he's lazy.

He's a brilliant footballer who has been our best player over the last ten years than any other. For that he commands respect from most, but many will still see him as a fat lazy bastard  .

excuses excuses excuses

Our next captain should have an exemplary record of professionalism in preparation together with an onfield & offield ability to set the tone & up the ante. That's not Lance imo.

I never said that Lance is perfect, Blue Vain. In fact, I think even Lance would accept the fact that his previously questionable work ethic etc deserves to tarnish his reputation somewhat. I can accept that Lance has his faults, in fact if you go back a couple of years I have written various posts which express my dissatisfaction with what I perceived to be as underwhelming performances from Lance.

What I don't like BV is that in this instance Synbad is re-writing history and it is largely being condoned.

One the page before this Synbad calls Lance “a good ordinary footballerâ€
