Was at a bbq yesterday (mostly Carlton supporters) also there was a talent scout for a team west of melbourne...

Funnily enough i was reading over the age whilst at this bbq and we got talking about the blues and there drafting, basically he said the blues opted for pace over quality and that is a major risk.

Grigs Had a good year but before that was over looked in last years draft.

Everyone was all over him and he would not comment further but did say that from all reports Gibbs ticks every box and is a recruiters dream.

Pavlich was also overlooked the year before he was drafted.

Who cares, has no one ever heard of improvement

Four of our guys were part of the AIS academy, pretty sure Grigg was one of those. If they were just pacy players, tell me how they make the Academy?

hmmmm.... look at Walker and Russel they been in the systen 2-3 years now and still cant kick, constantly turning the ball over.

ask anyone who has played footy if you struggle to kick at a young age you will find it hard to improve on. Thats what seprates the good from the bad in the draft.

Scott Clayton's from the bulldogs philosophy on drafting kids is that if they cant kick then they no good.... he will not select any kid with bad foot skills

So why compensate.......?

Possibly the compensation comes down to the two number one picks in Murphy and Gibbs now at the club. These are the ever reliable, gun players with impeccable accuracy off the boot.

Other players are drafted for other qualites apart from 100% kicking.

I think what I'm trying to say, (it is Monday morning...
 ) is that you can have an entire side of players who all have perfect foot skills, but what if they are all too short, or all recivers, or few have defensive abilities or marking faults? The side has to be rounded.

bit harsh on jordan russell, i think he's one of the better kicks in our team. his kicking is probably one of his biggest strengths.

Walker's kicking has improved along with his cnfidence, and I have not noticed a problem with Russell's kicking.

SOS was an awful kick, and handball, would it have been a good decision to pass on him? We all want players who are perfect, that's why we got Gibbs!!) If Griggs could do everything fantastically he would have gone #1. Apart from Judd, there are not too many players who are perfect Diesel - too slow; Kerna - recovery/ below knees; Doullie - too defensive, just a half back flanker; etc. Champions all. Give these guys a break. In 4 years we will know how clubs went. And in every draft every club drafts guys who don't make it. I am very happy with our drafting. And lay off Griggs, the guy hasn't even come along Royal Pd yet, and we are finding fault. Maybe someone should judge our collective wisdom from last draft and see how we fared. I reckon WH has watched a couple of these guys (like all of them) and has even more experience as us at making judgements. If we can't support all these guys on their first few days at the club, we are in real trouble.

Actually, i think if I were a recruiter I would be more concerned about my own choices, rather than criticising other Clubs.

Judd's risky shoulders made him slip from 1 to 3.

I spoke to...

an ex-recruiter on the weekend who used to work for a Western-Melbourne based AFL team and remains close to the recruiters there, who said:

* Carlton has taken a low-risk strategy because they've avoided attitude and players with questionable character traits.
* It was clear that Carlton were rebuilding, and rebuilding with a certain type of player and this was a great thing to do. He commented that the Bulldogs and the Eagles were really the only Clubs to be rebuilding with players of minimum sizes/ certain shapes / leadership and thought this was the way of the future.
* Thinks Carlton should be very happy with what they had, particulary with where we are.

This ex-recruiter cares not for Carlton, takes all opportunities to bag them and thinks Pagan is a terrible Coach.

Different people see different things.
