IMO, every club will say they got who they wanted blah blah, otherwise they wouldn't have picked them...

The problem I have with this ex-recruiter is firstly that he is an ex-recruiter, also he is based in Melbourne - all of Carlton's draftees bar 1 are from interstate. He is going on hearsay from this Western Melbourne club.

IMO you can't judge someone on who they pick now. You have to judge them on who they picked 4 years ago. Whoever picked Simpson, well done. Whoever picked Fisher - well done.

Whoever picked Russell and Hartlett - the jury's out on them, but that was 2 years ago. Give them another year or so before you bag them.

Walker's disposal was good before he was drafted, wonder why it's the most questionable part of his game now. Could it be that he's not being developed properly? Could it be that skills aren't worked on with any particular sort of emphasis at Carlton?

It's all well and good to say that unless you have good foot skills you can't come to Carlton - but confidence is a wonderful thing and continual honing of skills at a club with a professional staff (cough cough) would do wonders.

Lets see how Austin, Anderson, Benjamin and Grigg and Hansen go in the next 2 years. If they turn it over repeatedly then start bagging them.

I am sure that what skills deficincies they have now will be worked on by Ratten and Bradley and Libba.

We have lacked in this area as far as the Elshaugh factor is concerned.

I am fairly confident you will see a greater improvement of skills by the playing group because we have better coaches.

The well accepted rule of thumb for all recruiters is around 25% accuracy. Anyone who thinks they will pick 100% all the time is kidding themselves.

Just a half-back flanker? Too defensive? Bruce Doull? Gerry, you have a big weekend? Think you need a bit of a holiday old boy...some chill out time...rest up...maybe all the stress from the draft has got to you?

...I spoke to my sock puppet yesterday.

Asked him about what he thought of how Carlton fared in the draft, his thoughts on Smorgon/Pagan, our business plan for 07/08 and how he think we'd do in season 2007...

...unfortunately, he didn't have much to say... :(

Steady on Sig, I saw most of Doullies 300+ games and he was beaten only twice, but if he was in the draft this year, someone would tell us he is too defensive etc, and 2 years on he wouldn't have broekn through to the seniors and the knifes would be out. In Doullies third year he thrashed Royce Hart, the CHF of the TOC and was integral to us winning a flag in the biggest upset ever (well since 1970 anyway). I was just indicating that judgements the day after the draft are worthless and often wrong

....and that was after coming back from that broken leg in '69.

All the more reason to give Austin the number 11.

One other thing he said. He said Hampson is a freak and it was well known in footy circles that St Kilda and Collingwood were seriously considering taking him for Pick 9 and Pick 10 in the draft, but ultimatley went the other way. He said there was a game late in the year where Hampson pulled an Ablett manouevre througha pack after he took the ruck which stole the show and had the recruiters shaking their heads.

I spoke to the Club today and apparently Hampson is extremely excited about coming to Carlton and cant wait to get down.

Guys, I too was disappointed initially with Proud, Conners, O'Brien, Collard, Jetta & even Sheldon not been taken by us. Actually I still can't believe they where available at most of our picks and we past on them, but

We have drafted an "athletic" young man over 200cm tall with plenty of potential and supposedly the 2nd best ruck available.
We have drafted a DalSanto type midfielder in Griggs.
We have drafted a bottom age KP defender who has played SA seniors.
We have drafted 2 "x" factors with our 50+ picks.
All that and I haven't included Gibbs.

Just on potential alone, Hughes has done well, now lets hope potential turns into success.

Hampson sounds like the equally athletic Josh Fraser who showed great skill for a big man when he kicked that impossible goal across the body on the run from the left forward pocket. I think it was against the Bombers on Anzac Day. :?

I hope Dempsey and the assistant coaches can make him go harder at the ball and the man than Fraser does if this comparison is on the money. Still a bonus given he was the PP and it sounds like Hampson will make a lot of supporters eat their words in a few years time.

I take offence at that! I prefer the term 'rabid volunteer' thanks very much.

Most of you will know that I'm one of the more positive posters, but I can confirm that the comments here are all directly from an ex-recruiter and there was no spin involved. Unlike everything else on Saturday here in Victoria.

Once again for what it is worth, a mate that has been closish to Griggs this year.

Grigg is a 6 foot maybe 6 foot 1 midfielder who is a left footer, has clean hands and is quite quick. North Ballarat have a TAC Cup under 18 side which he played in for most of the year until breaking his thumb and missing the finals. Was a chance to go in 2005, but another season at under 18 level has seen him develop. He’ll be pretty good when he gets some more weight on him, and I’d liken him to a Del Santo type of player. I wouldn’t expect that he’d play too much senior football next year, but he may surprise.
