Richmond were wooden spooners last year. Motherless last, shithosue midfield, even worse defence.

We were on the way up having one 10 games.

How the hell can a team turn their fortunes around in one year, whilst it takes us 3 and were going not forwards, not backwards, but sideways.

Any answers?

When they had their bad year, they got their reward for it (draft picks).

We are still paying for Black Friday.

Because their list wasn't that bad, their application was(sound familiar) and to Wallaces credit he has them playing tough, accountable attacking footy.
A few draft picks have helped a little but they traded well also and that is not the only difference

I know BF was the worst day for the club ever and we could've had Wells and Goddard etc but I'm kinda thankful we don't have Goddard - he frustrates the hell out of me and I don't see what's so good about him IMHO. But Wells on the other hand - it would be super to have him running around in the Navy Blue...

Also we do have a top pick in 1AW - but unfortunately he hasn't progressed as quickly as Deledio has for the Tigers, which is a little disappointing because we know he has it in him.

They're not the whole reason but to say it's not part of it is stuffing your head in the sand.

Our team is still a hotch potch of 70+ picks and second chancers. We still have to allow for the fact that we have survived the heaviest penalties ever handed down, penalties that would have killed off lesser clubs.

We'll be ok, but there will be days like this.

Deano, you couldn't be more correct.

We have suffered immeasurably for that and it has resulted in the club making zero progression in 4 years.

I hate to say it but we need to do a richmond and hawks of last year and finish last and have fewer than 6 wins. It is that simple. It sucks, it encourages failure, but it is the only way to make progress.

Either we conform to this principle or we suffer for many more years

They have players who have a shitload of talent.

Richo, Coughlan, Brown are all very TALENTED. Any team with Richo up forward should be going well

Our list lacks the talent needed to step up.

Saying that I think we're very flat after 2 weeks travelling and a tough game last week.

Our forward line even with Fev would have to be one of the worst going around - we are last for marks inside 50.

You see Richo and then you look at our forwards and think 'who can take a contested mark like Richo can?'

They also have a Kellaway playing for them  Far from Premiership chances.

You have some good points there effes, especially the one about our last 3 weeks.

Let's just hope we don't put in a performance like this in 2 weeks time..

Richo didn't need to take any contested marks today, so poor was our midfield pressure!

In fact I know this will sound strange, but I thought Thornton and De Luca contested pretty well against 'impossible' odds today.

To judge Richmond on last year's form would be a mistake. It's pretty obvious that they were completely dispirited playing under Frawly and massively underperformed in 2004.

This year's Richmond is light years better than last year's version, but they've probably only improved their talent 10%. The rest is down to having the right mindset.

Also a coach that knows what he's doing can't hurt.

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, but I DESPISE the competition that makes supporters of struggling teams half-wish they only win 5 games for the season.

It's cancerous, and I hate myself for it. But a big part of me wonders whether we should do what Collingwood's doing right now, and did in Shaw's last season and 'play the kids' ie tank the season for a quicker rebound.

It's un-sportsmanlike, uncarltonlike. But that's the terrible system we're forced to play with.

Good point, one on one T Bird beat him in nearly every contest and the ones he didn't he got soft frees or frees that weren't there at all. Richmond simply killed us in the middle and the rest fell apart around it.

How about the Blues simply decide to (literally) not turn up to games, the system SUCKS that much!!!

That would get back the AFL! Stick it right up-em!

Thats it I'm afraid JohnM. Constantly the AFL and others harp on how a club would never tank games but that isn't the poiint- the point is that supporters sometimes almost (or in somecases genuinely do) wish that they would! that is why this game is becoming a farce! want to make football attractive again - get rid of the overwhelming need to @#$%&! the clubs up with a system that rewards crap!

Well said JohnM. But that's only one way to look at it. The other option is to follow the lead of a team that comprehensively beat a team today that followed the method you mentioned.

I'm talking about Geelong over St Kilda.

Geelong have shown that there is another way. But it did take them a few years to do it and they're still not quite there.

But it's just a disgraceful system that even has us thinking about tanking. The sooner the AFL introduce a lottery or precedence based on sustained shite-ness, the better.

Dont get carried away with Richmond....they are in the honeymoon period with Wallace . The bought a matchwinner in Nathan Brown and are extracting maximum effort out of players like Tuck, Newman, Gaspar etc..
Bit like Denis did last year with a few of our Indians...what they have got is team balance.....Simmonds was a good pick up and takes some heat of Richo...while Simmonds doesnt kick many goals he does require a decent player and takes the heat of Richo..unlike us who have all the heat on Fev when he plays.....Bowden, Pettifer etc are all cheats who will be found out when teams like Brisbane smash them back to earth with some physical pressure....sad part for me was seing Richmond brush our players aside and give us the rag doll treatment....
