Plus as a CWSTM, I have a major issue with it - I won't be able to go!

CWS7????? - there would be that many people wanting to do SOMETHING on good Friday it would be chockers - double it up as a fundraiser for the Good Friday appeal

How the teams are performing at the time will determine whether the game is a blockbuster....not whether the game has a theme.

A couple of years ago, in about Round 20, we played Essendon* at the G in front of about 34,000 people. Would an extra 4,000 people have this game a blockbuster or do you believe that if we'd been playing for the 'Multicultural Cup' it would have drawn 70,000?

The value of the game is not in the gate takings or in immediate extra attendances. I think your missing the point.

There was always going to be a multicultural recognition theme within the playing calender in the same way as other social themes are included. Sport is a great way of reinforcing common social views and multiculturalism is a genuine aspect of the Australian persona.

The real value in the theme is a chance to further communicate and reinforce to the Australian public that these 2 teams are tangible symbols of the meaning of multiculturalism.

Possibly more than any other in the competition ( excluding The Bulldogs) the rich multicultural histories of both teams from player and supporter representation create a natural link to the theme.

In the long run reinforcing such a theme and attaching our identity to it on a constant basis can have positive outcomes in terms of appeal to potential sponsorship opportunities with entities that wish to attach themselves with that persona. This is where the real value is.

If the club can position its identity as an accepted symbol of an important element of Australian society of which multiculturalism is then the payoff can be more than many of us realize at this point in time.

Its a great opportunity for the club the spin offs could be enormous with little additional effort required.

How can this be a bad thing for us? Even if the proposed 70-90k don't show up in Rd 20 or whatever, there will still be the regular 50k give or take, which is what we'd have if the match wasn't 'themed'. And it raises awareness about multiculturalism in the most Australian of sports.

If we don't jump at this we're flower morons.

We are always going to be fixtured twice against the Bummers so relax. Frankly I think this is Sheedy engaging in a very cunning PR exercise camouflaged in some specious claim of assisting Carlton. We dont need any more perceptions of charity especially from Sheedy. Crowds have been reasonable in spite of the ladder positions and they havent exactly been setting the football world on fire either have they? Once both clubs start winning a few games the crowds will be back at 'blockbuster' levels. Funny how they want to help us after Pratt and co are back on board.

Well said Anfield, the football public aren't gullible to the point that they will say 'ooh, muticultural cup' I'll go to that game. What we want is an Anzac Day blockbuster of which there is only one day. No matter how much we and others want to pretend all of these other 'special' games are they don't do shit.

If we really want to create something how about playing Richmond on Good Friday? Would much rather create something with them then let Essendon* have another day that they can claim as their own.

Brad said what I was trying to:

All the 'themed' games feature either Collingwood or Essendon* and I'm quite over it. If it creates positive press, additional income, I can't see what the problem is.

Incidentally, did anyone else laugh at this:
Quote:
"We should always play Collingwood, Richmond and Essendon* twice," was Sheedy's oft-repeated firm assertion yesterday.

Well Kev, that's one way to assuring yourself two wins a year...

Why not?.....what's to lose?.....when there's something to gain?

I think you're missing my point

I don't see how it makes the game a blockbuster or helps drag us out of the shit as Sheedy is claiming.

I agree with everything you're saying. It would be fantastic to recognise the multicultural backgrounds of both clubs, but it doesn't make the game a blockbuster.

I don't get some of you.

Some of you are dissing the rd 20 as a bad time. Well do you want us scheduled on Mothers Day like we were in 2006?

Some of you are too short-sighted. When both sides are travelling well, a rd 20 clash could bring a sell-out crowd at the MCG in a couple of years. Let's grab this initiative, give it a go and and at the same time, talk with Richmond about Easter Monday. 2 is better than 1 - why not grab this concept, let's face it - Essendon* could go and talk to Hawthorn about this instead...

Of course it doesn't make it a blockbuster the history of both sides ensures its already a blockbuster regardless what you call it.

That's the key. If a scenario like this can work, then we'll get a free ride in the press all week. The build up and exposure could be just as valuable to the club, if not more so, than the actual gate takings.

Think a bit laterally peeps, there are more benefits to be had than what happens on game day.

In all honesty I dont think Sheedy or Rama realized the potential of the idea past their initial simple thought of the idea as a gate bonanza.

but none the less I wish the idea had come from our marketing department instead of Essendon*.

Its time our marketing team really started to think outside the square and became creative.

Anyway its out there now so I hope the club capitalize on it.

The thing is its nothing new, apart from promoting it as a mulicultural clash, which is fine and a great idea, but we play Essendon* sometime between Round 16 and Round 22 every year.

When both teams are firing a round 20 clash will be a blockbuster regardless.

I dont think anyone is saying don't go ahead with it, but don't expect it to generate a lot of cash.

If we could get a regular good friday fixture (eg. tigers) it would be almost as big as Anzac day in 5-10 years time. Would be a bonanza for the club.

Good friday won;t be football free forever. Someone's gonna get it eventually, it may as well be us, before Collingwood take it and get another free ride.
