Just a quick question that had my Dad stumped, why did Brian play for Carlton whilst Sam went on to play for North?

:?

Not sure about that particular question, but if anyone has an answer would be good to put it in here:

Wasn't he a fairly pivotal player in the '68 GF?

Brian first played in 1967 and Sam in 1968. Myrtleford wasn't in our recruiting zone - and I am pretty sure that around 68 the zoning of Victoria became more stringent... 67 we just managed to sneak Brian into our team, and it was a wise pick-up. I wonder who was most responsible for recruiting him?

Brian was lured to Carlton from Myrtleford as a 21 year old Full Forward in 1967 for a huge headline making $2000.....a LOT of money then.

He headed our goalkicking in '67-'68.....but retired at age 22 after 34 games and 97 goals, due to a back problem; and eventually crossed to North and brother Sam.....but never managed a game with them..

Brian was great in our Flag win of '68....kicking 4 goals.

Sam was a different matter.....4 years younger than Brian; and a REAL HANDFUL for any Football Club to handle......but a great talent; and a great personality.

Slamming Sam as Lou Richards named him; was a real powerhouse on the footy field......a fantastic big occasion player.

Got himself into trouble here and there....did a Nude Centrefold for Truth if I remember.....was.....and is a very funny guy......and super intelligent.

From memory I think Brian played in every winning Carlton team during the 1968 season including the 1st premiership I ever saw Carlton win.

There was a third Kekovich brother named Michael who was going to play with North (may have even played under 19s). As always he was "the best of the lot" but tragically he was killed when struck by a car when out jogging.

We recruited Brian before the zoning started and he was a darn good player but he was also very temperamental type of guy but unfortunately for us the zoning have just been introduced before we where able to sign Sam who happened to be in the North Melbourne zone.

Their father always wished that all his sons played in the same team and North was very interested in Brian who by that time he had a very bad back so Carlton cleared him for about $2000.00 I think, he only lasted for a very short time with them.

Accidentally I always thought that Brian would spoil his brother with his temperament as Sam was a role model till Brian joined him.
