Our biggest problem is we lack the middle-aged players who have developed through the club - we've got young kids, rejects from other clubs, and the old stalwarts. Once the younger guys begin to develop, and are freed of the restraints imposed by the established 'leaders' of the group, then we'll begin to see who the real leaders are. Until then, we're just treading water...

I think if we can hold onto the quality youngsters we have, bring in others good quality youngsters from other clubs, while also adding more through the draft, we will be able to form a good side for the future.

It's all about getting the right mix.

Theres always a chance that we will have an upset win or two this year after someone gets sick of losing, decides to stand up and play a blinder - and others follow his lead.

However this would probably be the exception rather than the rule.

It seems to me that it would be very important for us to get hold of an extablished player either by trading or in the psd, that can show the appropriate leadership qualities and rub off on existing potential young leaders we have. a bit of synergy perhaps..

Off field leadership by the right kind of person would also be very important too.

If we had an A grade player from another club that had the experience of winning a recent flag, he would be well equiped to speak and lead with the authority gained from the success at his former club

This would be a tonic sorely needed by us right now.

Such a shame that Anthony Franchina wasn't a better footballer.
Or that Daniel Harford wasn't a better footballer.

Could really do with their exceptional leadership at the moment.

I think your post is pretty much spot on, Wolfe.

What we need are 2 or 3 players who, in a game, can turn to their players when the cards are down and say "lift your heads up fellas and follow us".

Kouta is probably the only one who could do this, but his body is getting tired and old.

Well said PJ. From my perspective I think those opposition runs of 3-5 goals are breaking us - we can stay competitive for most of the game but we have to have a presence somewhere, probably in midfield or defence as its hard as a forward when you're getting killed out of the middle, but there needs to be some added strength / leadership when the games threatens to run away.

For me leadership is secondary to a current lack of talent and skill.
Give me St Kilda's draft picks and a humble man like Kouta and we'd be winning.

Maybe when you are in a situation like Carlton has been recently maybe the concept of actually naming a leadership group should be looked at.
It may have been better to name the captain and his vice and not have any others nominated as leaders. It might not inhibit players who are currently not named as leaders from grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck. We could have 5 of 6 potential leaders in the club but they may not be showing it because they might feel this responsibility is the job of our current leaders.
