Gotta ask the question - in 2002 we were riddled with injury (entire playing list used besides Waite) and had IMO a coach with an inability to deal with poor performance (Brittain was a down hill skiing coach IMO).

This year we haven't had to use our entire list (Blackwell, Fisher, Hartlett, Raso, Russell have yet to see senior action) and, IMO and the opinion of most of the footy community, one of the best coaches in the comp. Yet here we are, sitting adift in 16th with no hope in sight (that I can see anyways, besides the hallowed priority pick).

Have we managed to move forward at all, or have we just treaded the treacherous draft penalty waters?

We have the potential to be better than 2002, but seem to have a distinct lack of interest amongst the playing group (again?).

2002, while it was the only spoon season, we were practically fielding the under 11's.

2003, however, was our most shitful year. We were appalling then, and should have finished last again, only to be saved by the Bullies (?).

This year, we're bad. There's no doubt about that.

But worse that 02?

Skills: Yes
Attitude: Yes
Potential: NO

To me, that's the most heartening part of the equation. As we have a team of youngsters, when the momentum goes, the attitude stalls, and the other teams have their way with us. Take last week, for example: When the 2 umpires goals were scored in the last, to let the Swans take the lead back, and then make a break, all of a sudden, the momentum was lost, and that was it. Game over, only 10 mins into the last, and we were barely more than a goal down, yet we'd come back from 4 down in the 3rd.

And why the @#$%&! can't we hit a @#$%&! target? the number of times we turned the ball over last night was just incomprehensible. Anyone got stats on clangers and turnovers from last night compared to season average, compared to league average?

Pagan has lost the players. Seeing as he has signed a 3 year deal. he may have to walk, cos we can't afford to sack him and pay him out.

winning 10 games last year was a bigger catastrophy.

Can't see winning a game for the rest of the year so I don't think thats going to be a problem...

2002 we were better just had an enormous amount of injuries.

The 2nd half of 2003 was the worst period in Carlton history. I Remember Kouta battling away by himself in the centre of the ground in our last few matches.

This year isn't as bad as 2003 because bar the Richmond game they have a dip.

If we are going to finish on the bottom of the ladder we should at least blood some young players - we've got nothing to loose, if we finish with less than five we get a priority pciks and we've blooded and have a fairer idea of the capabilities of the younger players
if we dont get the pp then we've given teh young kids more experience and that can only be a good thing.

Remember we couldnt draft eready made superstars, pagan took an axe to the list and we're in the process of rebuilding, the young kids we have take longer to develop and arent surrounded by a strong team so there will be growing pains.

we played above ourselves at the end of last year and in the wiz which was great for membership and sponsors, but the mess we were in three years ago is going to take alot longer to completely clean up.

We dont have any mid/second tier players because between 1995 and 2000 we didnt draft anyone decent (bar whitnall and fevola) and focussed on picking up second rate has beens.

Quick fixes are ridiculous (the last time we tried a quick fix we ended up witha whole bunch of blokes called mick)

We're five years away at least from seeing long term success - but at least we're on the way.

And you know what, I still have to sit through alot more losses before I've seen half as many losses as wins, and at 24 I've been to 7 day grand finals and seen 4 premierships, and two night flags... thats something that not many other people my age can compete with.

Are we really that far behind for it?

If we'd got a Priority Pick. So say we'd finished 13th and been able to draft Tambling and Russell, so we're one player better off.

Yes its a help, but weigh it up against increased membership and sponsorships and feel about the club, development of the players involved in winning 4 games at the end of the season.

Lets say we'd won 7 games and finished 13th without a Priority Pick and suddenly our benefit is a choice between Russell or Lewis....against membership/sponsors.

i don't think winning 10 games last year has hurt us that greatly other than the expectation it combined with the Wizard Cup created.

two things i saw on the weekend that dissappointed me alot.

1. Walker was in argy bargy with 3 brisbane players (aker, keating & scott) and not one of our players went over to give him a hand. appauling.

2. a passage in the 3rd quarter which saw several of our players shirk the issue and not put their bodies on the line to get the ball and the only player that did was 30 for Brisbane (Notting ?) and he got the ball and then got the handball off and they scored a goal. appauling.

however the continues development of Livingston, Thorton, Walker, Waite, the introduction of Betts, O'Halphin, Bryan and several others makes me believe we are in a far better position than we have been the last few years.

What i am sick off though - is Pagan continuely playing someone that has an injury - Stevens, Kouta, Fevola, Campo arent right due to some type of injury - playing them does nothing for the team nor for thier own confidence and we would be far better served with them missing a game or two and getting it right and playing some of the kids and getting them some valuable game time

I'd have to agree with this. 2003 was our worst year - those last 10 games were very dark.

We are far worse now - The repairing should have started end 2003 but they shuffled the cards and we are playing worse now with the players we have got . We should be looking positively towards next year but I have a feeling next year could be worse that this.

The whole club got it wrong again and now Collo is also trying to make excuses. We are the new Footscray the club - coach - president and supporters are all starting to except loosing as part of the game.
