I got this idea from here http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=2971

Dennis Pagan has said many times that the opposition coaches used our Wizard Cup matches to study our game plan closely which enabled them to "work us out" very quickly.

It made me wonder how we should approach the NAB Cup competition next year.

Should we:

A) go all out to win it for the cash and expose our main game plan?

B) go all out to win it with a different game plan to the one we'll use in the season proper?

C) trial players in differnt positions/roles to what they will be playing in the main season and if we win that's a bonus?

D) tank the NAB Cup , keep a low profile playing matches in the bush and give nothing away?

I'm starting to think plan C is the way to go.
We won't be in a cashed strapped position as we were this year so it's not imperative that we win it and it will also give the players some experience in different roles if there happens to be some early injuries in the main season.
What's your thoughts?

I like plan C.

Problem with not giving a shot about the preseason cup is a) the travel to the boonies for matches on grounds which may be described as "marginal", which leads to b) the possibilities of injuries due to poor ground conditions.

Besides, we have to make a go of it, we'll be defending our title!

The club needs cash- sponsors and members - they will try and win it again- at all costs

Pagan always tries to win the pre-season competition. He will definately be all out to win it next year because we have no hope of winning the real thing.

David Rodan likes plan D...

Go out to win it as well as trialling something which may requure trialling....that's what it's for.

BTW did anyone hear Shaw on SEN last night.
Said the Blues skills during the WC were superb and that's gone missing...maybe with confidence and also with a lack of depth.....

Have to watch the videos again? can't remeber if our skills were that good and have fallen away that badly

In 10 years time when we have our 5th top 4 performance in a row, young Carlton fans will look back at the era of 1996-2005 and see that despite a grand final appearance in 1999, 2 pre-season premierships. Their young impressionable minds will see that it wasn't too bad - at least better than half a dozen clubs without silverware whatsoever - and be blissfully unaware of the pain we're all going through.

Win whatever cup you can - remember, its CROCKERY not CUTLERY that we're after

Game plans are not the panacea. There is no one correct game plan to win a premiership. You need the players executing it perfectly. Actually you need the players first. neale Daniher hasnt changed his game plan. Now that he has the talent, it looks good. When his players are down on confidence and form it looks shit.

Play the NAB Cup to win. If other teams see your game plan it doesnt matter if you are good enough. Do you think the coaches havent worked out Worsfolds game plan? You still have to beat the 18 players on the park

I don't buy the "other teams have had a good look at us" rubbish. The Wizard Cup should have been a good confidence booster for us on the back of our finish last year. Unfortunately it appears we may have got ahead of ourselves and stopped working as hard.

Lance Whitnall was quoted after the Swans game saying that when we hit the front in the last quarter, perhaps some players thought it would all just happen. We are not good enough for that.

We lack intensity across the board which increases pressure and results in poor skills and decision making.
