From the club email:

Quote:
Denis Pagan said from Darwin this afternoon that the team selection was based on the team we are playing and also the venue. The Marrara ground is bigger than Subiaco, the largest of the regular AFL venues, both are 175 metres long and Marrara is 135 metres wide, 13 metres wider than Subiaco, which is 122 metres wide. As for the opposition, the Bulldog's forward line in particular is much smaller and quicker than most sides and therefore it is important the Blues select a side to match up well in defence with plenty of run over the ground. With that in mind Livingston and Teague, whose form has not been as good this season, were left out of the 22.

Quote:
A quick look at the Carlton travelling party revealed 24 players, the 22 selected in the side plus two emergencies just in case.

No mention of which 2 went and who stayed behind.

I reckon Our Next Great CHF would be the other.

Emergency or reserve?

And thegezman looks like I got rooted in that James for Minson trade! Once again I have no ruckman and I had no idea James would return so soon. Good work!

this mornings herald sun said Livo travelled with the rest of the team to Darwin.

Frank, agree with your point I can understand Livo being exposed for pace against the Doggies foward line but would would have preferred him to be still in the side based on form. Dropping him to the two's exposes him as a one dimensional player and can do very harm to his confidence.

Perhaps there will be a late change?

whats bowyers roll going to be i wonder?

gunna be a waste of a spot in the 22 if he doesnt get decent game time.

i'm hoping hes gunna be the hard body just bumping a few of the light bulldogs off the ball.

chambers is one of the best "runners" along with simpson at the club, so i can understand why they are in.

but man i feel for livo. has done nothing wrong and player polly his best game two weeks ago against the swans

While match-ups are important its not going to do Livo's confidence much good.

Sorry people, like other incidences of astounding selection choices this year, Livo being dropped is just another example of an incomprehensible match committee! Granted that any of these excuses regarding how small the Dogs forward line is understandable, Livo should therefore be allowed to play for the Ants. Not travel up there to sit around and do nothing.

His form hasn't warranted demotion regardless, but if it is a matter of team structure then ensure he gets a game under his belt in the ressies. I am starting to go beyond being slightly disappointed with the match committee and I am now starting to be very pissed off! There is no sense to some of the selections being made week in, week out at our club. We are starting to lose the plot in many areas at Carlton and this is another component of it. It is very deflating. :(

What gives me the shiats about the selections this week is that we are selecting to match up a side that is not that far above us on the ladder, a team that has been near the bottom for the last however many years. The one thing that I liked about 2003, even though we got flogged a few times, it always seemed to me that we were working towards playing a style of footy that when we eventually had a good side, this is the way that we would play. To me, selections this week are a backwards step, as Luke, while not having the best game last week, has definitely not been our worst since he got back in the side. Shouldn't we be working towards our blueprint and not reacting to others?

Like I said on another thread I didnt think he played well last week and was outplayed by a rookie in Merret who outbodied and outmarked him..after 5 seasons he has to do better than that.
I wouldnt have dropped though because we are still trying to develop him as a FB but I expect him to play and be a late inclusion....

Good point Matress - we are giving up our 'structure' that only a week ago was so important to DP and one of the main reasons why we have struggled this year!

Also agree with The Game around Norman. He is tall and fast - a great option for Darwin given that we are selecting players for the conditions all of a sudden!!

Regarding Livo - would he not be an option for Rawlings? - as I think he will play forward.

Truly unbelievable! How did Luke have a bad game last week? In the 1st half, he did well on Bradshaw and kept him to 1 goal, which was a ripper kick beyond 50 metres on a 45 degree angle. Pushed him wide and made sure he had little impact. Did well. In the 2nd half he was outplayed twice by Merrett when caught out of position by our turnovers. And the way the ball was coming in even O'Reilly would've got kicks! Otherewise, he was all over Marrett and on a couple of occassion, ran off him well to gain possession and create play. Livo did not have a bad game last week. In fact, I would go as far as to say he had as good a game as T-bird.

I agree. There would be no point in taking ALL 3 emergencies if they weren't planning to play at least one or two of them.

Remember, Marrara is a bigger ground than Subiaco. We will need fit men to play.

It may depend on Fev's groin.

I still, don;t have any prob with selection this week - it will be a running game and big bodies tire in the humidity - its difficult to breathe even at night so the big boys will struggle.

Danny if that was their thinking you would think Lance would have been first on their list

How so? Choose a 30 gamer with 1.10 to his name (or similar) or a career forward, albeit on a low performing plateau, with about 200 of them 'goal' things?
