with apologies to Mikkey - it just seemed so apt.

So it goes like this ....

In April, well into a four bottle of red lunch at superior (read expensive)city lunch venue, flushed with wizzer success, arsehole st Kilda supporter on the table next to me starts mouthing off about how good St Kilda are, etc, etc, but when he starts carping on about the blues, I decide (flushed with red) to intervene.

Well, one thing leads to another and, like I said flushed with red and wizzer success, we laid a bet.

It goes like this:

Whichever of St Kilda and Carlton finishes with a cumulatively greater score when all their meetings for the year are added up (see I even had finals in mind at that time), wins. He took the 'aints and I, of course, the Blues.

The bet: lunch for winner and six of their mates at said establishment.

Hangover realisation: about $1,000 (if the loser is lucky).

Now as it turns out, my faithfull luncheon companion records said bet on piece of linen (Napkin) which is held by proprietor - also a Blue bagger.

As it transpires, it all comes down to Sunday.

So, I could hope that the said piece of linen is destroyed in some starnge act of spontaneous combustion, or...

WE must WIN. :!: :!:

No Reivolting, no Traitor, no old man Harvey......

Could it be?

So to use Mikkey's translated words - "wise men don't piss into the wind", I'll wait till Sunday to see which way the wind is blowing. (see: Mens Sana in Corpore Sano)

I'm sure it was Lucy from the Peanuts who said, "Winners are grinners and losers are goats".

GO BLUES!!!!!!

Ouch. Never make a bet when you're drunk. In fact, someone should offer 'drunken bet' insurance.

Tip:

If you lose, organise the lunch at the same venue for as late in the year as possible. Top-notch restaurants in Melbourne have a habit of getting bistro-d with a frightening regularity. So by the end of the year, if you're lucky you may only be forking out for a few warm chicken salads, a couple of wood-fired pizzas and ten bottles of some unremarkable corporate wine.

If you win, make the booking yourself for a.s.a.p.

Good luck!

Or, you could just tell him to get stuffed.

Drunken red wine laden steak dinner at Lazar's Charcoal Grill in August 2002 when we were heading for our first spoon.

Made a silly bet with a Geelong supporter that we would finish higher than them in 2003 (steak dinner) and a further bet that we would make the 8 in 2003 (another steak dinner).

Comfortable in the knowledge that our injured players in 2002 would be available and firing in 2003, Hulme, Allan, (I must have been drunk) and the return of Kouta and appointment of Pagan I thought I was home and hosed.

Costly but at least I ate steak too.

ahh - i never make bets.

and for the reasons highlighted above.

im far to emotional with teams that i follow and always think we will win regardless of what the situations are.

but - i do hold fast - ive never made a bet, other than an on-going EPL bet about whose team will finish first - but that is more just an excuse for me and about 6 mates to have a night on the piss.

You see if you do it yearly and we have had the on going bet since about 2000 then its a tradition and you know you cant break tradition :D so that gives the boys an excuse to go out for the night and get on it.
