Just following on from this discussion http://www.talkingcarlton.com/phpBB2/vi ... php?t=3507 , I thought I'd get the views of TCers on whether if the money was right would you mind if Carlton played one or more "home" games interstate. If you agree with interstate "home" game(s) which state?

For the record, my opinion is now that we don't play "home" games at Princes Park and the game is so focused on revenue, it wouldn't worry me where we played them if there was a cash winfall to be had.

As much as I'd love it to be Sydney for selfish reasons, I reckon Darwin is more of a footy town, and would create more membership/merchandise opportunities for the club.

without sounding like a right prick - they should never sell their home games.

that is the last ditch effort to save your club in my opinion and something the club doesnt need to look at to survive.

I'd just be happy to have a forward thinking and energetic board looking for new and exciting ways to build the club's name back to the former glory we all cherish. If that means moving a game or two away from Melbourne, so be it. If that means striking a deal with a club to play a blockbuster game, so be it. If that means radical sponsorship arrangemets, so be it. If that means doing a deal with the AFL to foster/develop an untapped area/region, then so be it. Anything to make us stronger than all the other clubs off the field will most likely get my vote.

We have a big following in the city of churches and if we were to play a 'home' game their against Adelaide - the stadium would be packed.

As long as the financials are in our favour, then by all means!!!

if anywhere - i think west coast is the best option.

for no other reason that the club gets massive money from the events they hold when the club plays in WA.

That why - every year we play in WA twice

Interesting thought Wangers as you may not be aware that the SACA is trying to get AFL football to the Adelaide Oval via the courts. Will pay money to teams interested to get it there too. $300,000 figure being suggested. It's a great football ground too and I'd love to see us play here.

That's it then, Crows v Carlton on GOOD FRIDAY. It's about the only "date" left ripe for exploitation, apologies to those of faith who may find this suggestion abhorrent.

It's gotta be Sydney.

We're leaving the biggest untapped market in the country to be divided up between Essendon* and Collingwood....and all with AFL help.

We'd fill a home game at the SCG no probs, and get a good crowd at a Telstra Stadium away game.

It would be good for us, and good for the game.

Aren't you in favour of changing our traditional colours and jumper for more merchandising cash?

What's the difference in reality?

Think large, people. We're lagging behind in marketing our club, and it shits me that Essendon* and Collingwood kick our arses in this area.

Neither Essendon* nor Collingwood play a home game in Sydney KK

I just don't see how this would broaden the brand.

You're thinking in a very narrow way. Think possibilities.

No, Essendon* and Colingwood don't, but they practically do. They get a guaranteed match up here, complete with AFL fanfare, media coverage of Sheedy doing his bit coaching the North Shore Bombers for the weekend, etc. Collingwood get almost an entire weekend to themselves.
If that's not an advantage and a way to boost themselves up here, I don't know what is.
Sydney is almost at saturation point for Swans supporters. There are lockouts at the SCG, which is great for the game. What we need now, is some support for other teams in Sydney, which will see the support for the game go beyond fairweather level.

I just think it should be US who gains that advantage, and reaches new fans, not those filthy teams.

And what's more, given the level of Carlton support up here, it's a market cherry ripe for picking, and we wouldn't have to start from square one.

KK's right we do have massive support up here. I remember years ago we we always playing showcase games up here before the Swans arrived.

However Im still a traditionalist and long for the days of suburban Sat arvo footy beginning with the u19 then ressies then firsts and would prefer to see us keep our home games home.

But hey weve proven to be money sluts in the past so if they did do sell a few home games let it be Syd pls.

I'm very much a traditionalist as well but as soon as the real home games were moved away from Princes Park (which had to be done) footy changed for me. I voted Sydney also but can also see us play for eg. Port at the Adelaide Oval as a home game.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The Board needs to think cleverly in this area.

For example, we should have taken up the Richmond offer about the annual blockbuster, and if that means thibking about taking games interstate for $400,000 a year, then lets think about it. Maybe it can pay for the redevelopment of PP. After all, the game is now for TV, and if we don't foster our interstate interest we will wither anyway.

But it shouldn't end there. We lag dreadfully behind the other clubs. For example, Essendon* have a massive marketing arm, running a variety of coterie groups on a regular basis, things such as the lawdons, and dinner and tours of windy hill (I know all this through a work colleague), costs are minimal ($50 a year which would cover mailout costs and some), and you pay for the dinner. He has to date been to three this year, Sheedy is at each of them, and takes questions.

Collingwood, for Christsake, have power bars that they market now in Europe!

I think we need to think laterally, in all respects, merchandising too, and make sure that this club grows off the field too.

Go Blues.
