Was Kade Simpson's promising and best game yet enough to warrant a Rising Star nomination?
Good to see him burn off Jones for pace and kick a great goal, whilst also showing good field kicking. It did surprise as I haven't seen as much of him as some Blues fans.
Were there any other standout performance ths round to get the nod? :?:

it's his 3rd season & i'm pretty sure the rising star is for players in their
first or second years provided they are under 21 & have played less than 20 games,

Simpson is eligible as he was under 21 on 31 Dec 2004 and had played less than ten games before this season.

yes he turned 21 in may & has played only 14 games but i think you will find he's ineligible because it's his 3rd season , i may be wrong but i think it's only for players in their 1st or 2nd seasons,

The AFL Rising Star Award was instituted in 1993 to recognise and encourage talented young players in the AFL. After each round of home and away games, a player is nominated and at the end of the season a panel of experts selects the winner. The winner must be under the age of 21 at January 1 of that year, must not have played more than 10 games to the start of that season and must not have been suspended by the AFL or State League tribunals during the season (as with the Brownlow Medal, players found guilty of certain offences and fined or reprimanded by the Tribunal remain eligible to win the award).

Doesn't say anything about number of seasons...

Has he played well enough this year to get a nod? Eddie Betts has booted 3 or 4 and justifiably hasn't received a nomination.

Myself and Tyrants were talking about this today.

I reckon he'll get it this week.

Norman got one and so did Sporn. Both players are doomed.

Sadly, you could be right RW.

Simpson was good on the weekend, but I reckon one of Brisbane's young brigade may pip him this week.

Most of Brisbane's young guns are inelgible.

Selwood, Sherman, Drummond and Merrett all are ineligible.

Selwood and Merrett are all eligible for this week's nomination. They were all 20 as of the 1st of January and played less than ten games.Drummond turns 22 this year and ineligible.
Amazing that a side that has won 3 flags and played in 4 Grand Finals, can still have more young talent than Carlton.Taking into account the draft penalties they are still ahead and must have the best recruiter in the AFL.

Is their young talent really better? Or is the young talent at Brisbane being gradually introduced into a winning environment patrolled by leaders such as Voss, Akermanis, Brown etc and ably supported by blokes like Michael and Lappin?

Not better, but they certainly have more young players who are playing well and lifting the older players back to near their best. They went down the road of tried and true last year and came up short. But through shrewd recruiting and not trading picks they have kept rebuilding the stockpile of kids.Which is what we failed to do after '95 and why we are now bottom of the ladder.

Personally I think it's the other way around, playing with the likes of Voss, Aker, Brown, Lappin, Black etc etc must make those youngsters feel 10 feet tall.
Who do we have who is showing our younger players the way like the senior Lions are?

Brissie have actually had a better draft picks than the Blues over the last 6 years yet in that time they have won 3 Flags .... played out in a GF and potentially this year going for another flag..... hmm our past has seen us get last 2nd last potentially last again and the other results not far off that mark.....

The reason why Brisbane have had better draft picks... They have traded some fringe plyers or been forced to trade some to get better picks but have kept there core ... The blues have given away (Pre Pagan Days) Draft picks or of course had the AFL remove 2 years of good picks. But even with Penalties its a sad day when the 3 Peet GF side has had a better run at the draft....

And of course any potential young kid will get a fast acceleration in playing ability with such a experienced list. how good they are is hard to tell but in the Brisbane list they certainly can play to there full potential .. Take them away from that team though and the potential drops a fair bit .. Ala HEadland to name the obvious one

I know this is off the track a bit but..Brisbane have some clear advantages..obvious ones like the salary cap extras, even though they are reducing them...
A home ground advantage with the conditions that has to be worth several games a year.

Access to the best talent in Qld and a good foothold in the NT...the Northern Eagles is virtually a Brisbane only recruiting source...standouts like Reiwoldt they might lose courtesy of the draft but they would have the best handle on the other talented Qld kids and for all this talk of them needing extra money to keep and attract from other states, I bet the Vic clubs would tell you that getting and keeping Qld kids would be just as hard and every Vic club has to compete with very other Vic club for our local talent.....kids like Brennan and Corrie wanted to play for Brisbane because its close to NTand family etc...recruiters from down south would have to be put off taking some kids who were reluctant to come and you would gaurantee that Brisbane would be manipulating local kids into wanting to play for them only.....
Its a lot harder for Vic based clubs who are competing against each other and interstate teams who have advantages and the backing of the AFL who want them to succeed.....six out of the last 10 premeirships have gone to interstate clubs and you can add another one this year....its getting harder and harder to compete with the interstaters...
