Ok i think people will complain about this but if every member gave $30 i know that a lot for some people especially if they have four or five people in family with membership each or people on Austudy like me or on low pay or newstart we could get over a million to pay that tax bill but then again they would tax that million leaving us with another $300 000 short just to help our club.

Actually, if the donations are made through the Australian Sports Commission, a) the donations are tax-deductible, and b) the club possibly wouldn't be taxed on that money.

Its either a matter of raising the cash or shutting down the social club so the taxman gets nothing.

Id favour closing the social club down if that meant avoiding the tax liability.

In some ways this would give a bit of satisfaction - that the taxman went in a bit to hard for his own good and ended up getting nothing, when he might have been better off taking a less of a tough line with the club.

Shut down the Social Club.

What exactly is it used for these days anyway?

Isn't it used by all the grannies in the area who opposed the lights being installed and the underground carpark...

Can you imagine the reaction from the "blue rinse" members if we shut down the Social Club, it was bad enough on the day we handed out leaflets on "Support this Club" day.

My guess is that if the ATO are ruling the Social Club exists for the benefit of its members and guests rather than for the benefit of the sporting club (i.e. CFC), then it certainly does not qualify as a tax free sporting charity through the ASC.

If you read the article it should be clear that the Social Club gains significant income from its pokie operations in Laverton, which is why that facility was setup. I believe Essendon* do a similar thing at their redeveloped Windy Hill social club complex, but possibly it is structured differently, perhaps operating under the football club name.

Bloody good idea.A 30 buck levy on every member to get us out of the shit would get my backing. How many could genuinly say they couldnt come up with the bucks ? Small sacrifice in my books.

Im sure that some form of membership levy / fundraising effort would go a long way to helping the club.

Of course we have a number of quite wealthy members who might consider Carlton to be a very worthy cause.

One area that I am not entirely happy about at Carlton is the marketing area.

Im certainly no expert, but I always get the feeling that a lot more could be done to raise funds that isnt being done - for whatever reason.

Every adult member should be able to afford $30.

I'm willing to fork out for the cause.
