I don't think we recruited and prepared Yarran with the expectation that he'd be providing match winning qualities in his first year.

He's being given a taste this year, and that's all.

what should we realistically expect of a barely turned 18 yo 5 game (or whatever) first year player?

that he be an important player in the team? don't think so but there are always exceptions (ie freaks) who are causing some of us to wring our hands. yarran has shown glimpses of what he can do and it's mighty impressive. would almost be the most all-round skillful player on the list. at this stage of his career the glimpses are ok with me.

that he give 100%? yes, i think we should expect that of anyone. does yarran give 100%? i don't know how he trains etc but i'm unconvinced he does on match day. he really looks to be cruising to me. how much of this is down to his natural laconic style or a lack of confidence / fitness i don't know.

that he perform a given role, which by association makes him a contributor? yes, think we should expect this of anyone. again, yarran hasn't been convincing to me but i'll cut him slack here due to:
- our farcical F50 entry / structure
- i'm not really aware of the exact nature of his role. is it to hit the scoreboard? too much to ask given our rubbish F50 setups! or is to run around like alwyn davey and force turnovers or haphazard disposals? given his pace he could surely perform this role if that's what's being asked of him.

yarran didn't ask to be drafted by carlton and has made it clear he would've preferred to remain in WA. don't let yarran become the focus of dissatisfaction with aspects of the club and / or rich's outstanding debut season. none of this is yarran's fault.

he did say on 3AW last week that goodes is his role model and he saw first hand how hard goodes works during a game. his stated aim during the interview was to be able to get fit enough in the next couple of years to emulate goodes.

Overheard an interesting coversation last week involving a first round draft pick from last year ( alright, I was eavesdropping) and he had some things to say about Carlton and Yarran.
While i wont name him he said that his club dont rate Carlton at all and when talking about Yarran he said that Yarran was good as a below age player and last year levelled off and didnt have a great U/18 championships. He said that not many clubs rated Yarran highly and if we hadnt taken him at pick 6 he would have slipped right down the order.
These are not my thoughts but an interesting observation from someone in the know.

Players need to be prepared by the system to play within a system of sustainable footy.

We just hope for the best.... and talk about Carlton swagger...

Funny isnt it???.... if youre not doing everything right youre going to get swamped by theams who are doing more things right.. and no matter how good you are.. youre going to have to try to keep improving or they will run over the top of you....

... and if you have a "swagger" mindset... and live in the past .. appointing people below standard as coaches cos you think they might be ok... youre going to be found out.

This is a ruthless sport to the weak and unprofessional...the draft gives you an opportunity but you still must be savy enough to plough forward ... ask Freo....

Taking the wrong options is devestation.

Not going through coaching processes with ultimate care will kill you. The game is too advanced to stand still or not be ahead of the traffic...

Ask Lance and Stevo...

Its changing rapidly... those that think in the past and dont do everything right to prepare will be swallowed whole and spat out by the game...

watching him live last night he looked way off. he had to keep coming off because he was absolutely shot after one or two chases. in space looks great but needs to learn to work harder and certainly needs to get fitter. as for the argument he is 18 away from home etc that is weak as p!ss. please name me any of the top 30-40 players drafted last year that have the poor fitness level this guy has? this is afl football and these kids are better prepared than ever before. needs to go backs to the bullants learn to run games out and get ready for one heck of a preseason. to play afl in that shape is simply not good enough.

I have been avoiding posting and don't read the threads much anymore but I will have to back you up on that point Kezza.

I have spoken with several recruiters over the season and there is definitely some interesting comments regarding Yarran. Most have rated his ability but there have always been massive question marks regarding his committment, fitness and mental capacity to handle AFL football.

Majority of clubs didn't have him in their top 20.

I just hope they are wrong!

we only have to look to last night to realise we need to be VERY patient with yarran. leon davis's first 8 seasons were nothing short of sh1thouse and how he wasn't delisted after those 2 grand final performances is beyond me. but obviously mick and co. had faith in him and he is repaying them in spades now. i'd like to think yaz has even more raw talent than leon does as he can take an overhead grab, is a much mroe pentrating kick and better off both feet. we may not even have to wait as long as pies fans did but i believe when we really start challenging for a premiership yaz will be really hitting his straps. keep the faith, we're not going to win a flag in the next 2 years anyway.

There wasn't a Pie within shouting distance as Yarran ran inside 50 and hit the post.

I wouldn't call Yarran soft.

I swear I saw Yarran bowl one Pie over yesterday.

Yarran was all class late after he totally bamboozled Thomas on the HFF and got a kick off after being cornered.

He is not a Gary Ablett/cyril rioli (fine wine ie grange) at the moment, so i thought of an average wine (ie goon bag). Plenty of young people drink goon because its a means to an end (ie getting Drunk), and plenty of blues fans are accepting of his performances at the moment as they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. (ie flag)

Hope that clears it up? I'll keep it simpler in future.

Well I haven't spoken to any recruiters however I remember seeing a Liam Pickering pre-draft rating and he had Yazz at around 5 or 6.
The Herald Sun had him inside the top 8 players.
Emma Quayle has a pretty good track record at rating U/18 players and she had him at #2.
Wiseby had him at #2 as well.

No way he was ever going to go outside the top 10.....the kid oozes class.

I see alot of Neon Leon early days in Yarran.

On Before the Game tonight Leon said he took that next step by realising how hard Bucks and Licuria worked on the track, and that's what he had to do to reach the level he is at now.

Personally I don't know many players in the AFL who have improved as much as Leon has in his career.

..if yer havin' to wait for a top ten pick to play good footy for as long as Leon's taken [dunno about 8 yrs, mebbe 6ish], and they're not KPP,, then yer waiting to long.. ..not saying Yaz will take that long, i've got no idea but he's definately too far off AFL pace to be much this year.. ..but he's bottom aged, and like a few other young young kids is a bit of a non-event for their first season.. ..but if we have to wait too long.............
