What could possibly compare to beating Collingwood in a Grand Final when they were 42 points up at half time and truely believing the line from their theme song

"the premiership's a cakewalk"

The changes made to the way football was played in the second half of this game under the pressure of a Grand Final literally changed the eway the game ws played.

This is where hand ball and running with the ball started rather than the kick to position, mark and kick to position game that was played in the first half.

Greatest game ever.

This game was the start of the modern game with plenty of play on, run and carry with handball.

The greatest comeback ever.

The greatest mark ever.

The greatest goals ever.

The greatest players ever.

Yeah, great to break the drought, but having been to both, there was something BIG about the 1970 GF. Both results were great too. But coming back from 44 points down and half time and win by 10...

First of all i should state that i was at that game and every other previously under RDB.

I think too much has been made of it(1970) being the trendsetter of the modern game and in fact Barassi himself too this day still is a liitle embarrassed by the significance.

The truth, to my mind, was that football was ,as it always has been, re-inventing itself .

To confirm that view one only needs to closely view that game and analyse the skill levels of individual players in handballing and kicking.

The young guys like Crosswell were learning to be proficient with the drop Punt but the vast bulk were stll using a mixture of drop-kicks, torps and flat punts.

Handballing skills were generally poor and would be for several seasons.

The turn around to my mind was more about playing on ( via hand and foot) at all costs something that Carlton and others had been evolving for some time.

The 30.30 .210 game earlier that year against Hawthorn highlights how successfully we were moving the ball on!

Further to my post above i still have to acknowledge that it was my greatest Carlton moment ever!

Like Bondi and Dominator, I've been to all the modern era flag wins, from 1968 through 1995

1970 has iconic status, probably the greatest premiership win in AFL history, and certainly the most recognised.

The game had it all, from a truly awesome first half of power football from Collingwood, to the third quarter paradigm shift in the way the game was played, to the incredible mental strength of our boys to believe and persist, and to those final heartstopping minutes with only four points separating the teams until Jezza kicked the miraculous bouncing sealer.

Lets face it, we've been spoiled with riches, and all the flag wins have been great. For me, the 1972 GF and 1999 PF come a close second and third.

Sorry to be picky but I remember that game well and it was Round 2 1969

You are right on that.The brain gets addled after all this time.

It further illustrates the point however that our fast attacking footy was evident well before the 1970GF.

We were at that 1969 Carlton vs Hawthorn game at PP, when we kicked 30.30.210.....and if I remember correctly......Ian Robertson kicked the last goal.....what a day!

But......for thrills; excitement and pride in our team.....nothing beats the 1970 GF......it had everything.

1970 was wonderful, but I would rate 1972 as its equal. 72 doesn't get the kudos because it was so close after. In 72 we were playing a side that had dominated us for 6 years. Even in our two flag years the Tiges had missed the 4 and all Blues fans breathed a sigh of relief. They creamed us in the 2nd semi final replay and then we fell in in the prelim (in 1970 we won the prelim easy and only lost the 2nd semi by 10 pts)

On grand final day you have never seen a more arrogant bunch than the tiges fans. They thought they had it won (and so did I). I still remember being in standing room at the western end for the 2nd semi and watching Sheedy clapping under Big Nicks nose when he fluffed a kick from virtually the goal line. Nick gave him the stare and maybe that was the point, two weeks out when we won the flag.

Big Nick and the chairman of selectors (Jack Wrout???) made wholesale positional and tactical changes. We kicked 6.14 (or thereabouts) in the first 2nd semi at VFL Park and 27 on gf day - that's a turnaround. Rarely has a radical plan been so perfectly executed. I wasn't confident until the final siren despite having a large lead most of the day. The pies have never beaten us when it really counts in my viewing memory, but growing up the Tiges were our nemesis. I remember crying after the 69 gf (I was very young!)

So 1972 is right up there- not a massive turnaround during the game but a massive turnaround in planning and form from the 2nd semi and prelim. 2 equally great and unexpected triumphs against hated foes in 3 years. The satisfaction was not only in the winning but the hurt visited upon supportes of the Pies and the Tiges....and the scars still linger (especially with the Pies who still have a bad case of 1970 syndrome.

For all the Drama of the 68 drought-breaker, or the 70 comeback, the 79 Harmes Tap, or 81-82, I think the 1995 Grand Final has to rank as one of the crowning achievements of the Club.

Well, maybe not so much the 95 GF, but the whole 1995 season, to which the Flag win was just the cherry on top of the cream which was that season.

OK, so maybe 1995 doesn't qualify as one greatest moment, so maybe the thumping win in the GF was the crowning great moment of the greatest team season to that point.

while i was old enough to comprehend the magnitude of our win / effort, i was too young to put a real perspective / understanding on it especially as it seemed we were going to do likewise every couple of years ...

i didn't go to the game. at half time i turned off the radio had a sook over the way things were going. eventually i caught a live cross to the 3/4 qtr-time score during the the johnny walker sports show on the ABC and willed myself NOT to listen to the last qtr in case i jinxed us (esp in light of 1969 where we played a horrid last qtr after a big 3rd qtr).

reckon it would rank as our finest hour to date, especially as it left such deep scars in our most bitter rival that are still evident today!!

for me personally i'd say the 1982 flag was the most satisfying given what we were up against that day. bitter foe, unfit players (bluckley & maclure), injuries during the game etc. just like 1970 and 1972 we overcame the odds to triumph, only difference is that i was old enough to truly appreciate it ...
