Definately Carltons greatest day I reckon .
Every GF win is special , but 1970 was a special kind of special .

The delisting of Ricky Mott anyone?

But seriously, I was to young to really appreciate 72 let alone 68/70 so I'll confine myself to subsequent events. The '79 flag was special, great win, great season, great game and great individual highlights with of course the Harmes tap the standout. The 95 flag was a vindication of the best season we've ever had and the only time I've been able to relax and enjoy a GF comfortable in the knowledge we had the game in keeping a long way out.

But for all that, my greatest Carlton moment post-72 is not a GF, but the 99 PF win over the despised Bombers. We were no chance that day, I didn't want to go and see the horror I expected to eventuate but what a finish. And then to see all the Bombers fans packing up from their premature grand final ticket queue - well that was just magic.

I too wasn't born until 6 years later so I never experienced it but I guess it would be something like being down by 7 goals against the Bummers in the GF and coming back and winning in 2010 which would be pretty damn special. In that case, my answer's yes!!

What it was like was like that game against the Bombers a couple of years ago when we came back in the 3rd quarter - with Fev kicking all those goals.......

Except........... it was against Collingwood, no-one had ever seen anything like it before, and....... it was a Grand Final!!!!!

And everyone talks about Jezza and that mark and goal, and Teddy Hopkins and his goals. But I tellya, who was awesome and would've won the NS if they'd had one back then, was Brent Crosswell. He was great. Our only winner in the first half, and carried on with it in the second.

1995 qualifying final vs Brisbane is one that is often overlooked.

I don't think it was the greatest moment in the history of the Carlton football club- but still up there amongst the best moments.

The goosebump moments for me are when Kouta kicked those two quick goals in the last quarter. We looked shaky up until then and could have choked. Everyone in the crowd behind the goals went ballistic with the first one when he dodged Champion.

p.s - I like the above comments about 1970 and 72.

Interesting that of the 10 premierships RDB was involved in, he rates 1970 as his favourite memory.

Yes, that game is underrated. We forget how hot Brisbane were at that time, seen by many as the 'great white hope' to end our season of dominance. When we got past them, I knew the flag would be ours.

Yes....it's a tragedy that Brent "Tiger" Crosswell hasn't got a Norm Smith Medal....he was certainly BOG in the '70 GF.

What about retrospectives a la the Brownlow?.....all of the votes from the Press were unanimous for Tiger.....oh well....

I agree, it was pretty special. I remember the 'Kou-ta' shout go up afterwards. He was up there with some of the 'goosebump' champions of the past in Jezza and Crosswell, in being able to do freakish things on a footy field.

The start to the 1982 grandfinal was pretty special too, with 3 goals IIRC in the opening 2 minutes.

Other special moments for me were the comeback against Collingwood after Magro knocked Jezza out. The day Bosustow touched the sky against Geelong. And all those barnstorming comebacks in the premiership quarter, and the floorboards of the grandstands thundering.

But nothing beats the 70 grandfinal. I remember listening to the 3UZ 'lp' over and over again growing up, and I know parts of Harry Beitzel's call off by heart. 'It's bouncing and bouncing and bouncing ... and it's a goal!' Still gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

I've only seen three of the modern era, '68, '81 and '87 so I can't comment on the others, even though I've seen them all many times since.

I think the 1970 GF is special because of all the reasons others have posted and probably established our mindset for the golden period that followed. The 'we are never beaten and can win in one quarter of footy' attitude.

Personally, my favourite is the 1972 win. That score will NEVER be beaten and my two all-time favourite players were in the game. Big Nick and Jezza in that order. Let's not forget we were never expected to win that game. For the young posters, the rivalry is with Collingwood and that is true over history but in that particular era, Richmond was the enemy and it got worse when that animal Balme king-hit Southby (one of the fairest players ever to pull on a boot), and cost us a flag. Balme could singlehandedly save Haiti from destruction tomorrow but I would still never forgive him for that cowardly act. It still gets me going after all this time. I can almost understand why Richmond supporters still hate Big Nick after the Nevill Crowe tribunal fiasco...

Blue Sombrero, I have seen them all since 1968 and agree with you totally about 1970 and 1972.

'72 was a bit like 1999 prelim. We had been well beaten in the second semi replay, Richmond had the wood on us, they were the reigning premiers and there was a real rivalry between the clubs as the two dominant forces of the era.

Even though we were well ahead all day, I couldn't believe we were going to win until the final siren went.

And '99 I still can't believe it. Remember even Parkin said it was a B grade team.

Yes.....when Richmond beat us by about 7 goals in the 2nd Semi Final in '72......bloody Sheedy in the back pocket taunted Nicholls every time big John rested in the forward pocket.

"Give it away Nick.....you're too old" Sheedy kept saying.

Then we beat St.Kilda by 15 pts in the Prelim., enabling us to face Richmond the next week in the GF.

What a day was that Grand Final!......we kicked 8.4 in the first qtr....10 in the second......7 in the 3rd......then put on the brakes in the last with only 3......but a Final Score of 28.9 177......to 22.18 150.....still a Grand Final record winning score.

Jezza kicked 7....Walls 6....and Nicholls 6; and I'll never forget that Des Tuddenham was sitting in front of us; and he said it was the best football he'd ever seen.

Memories are made of this!
