I think the real issue is selecting only 22 players from a list where probably 30 or so are seriously laying claim to a start. How do you fit Curnow in when you have Ellard, McLean and Carazzo lining up? Same with Collins as a lead up forward. Or Kerr? In the backline where do you slot in Tuohy, or Davies or Austin?

I can't believe you left Y out of that...... Don't you know anything about footy???

Why Y?

I just noticed that a poster on CSC said it was a hand injury. The way Bower was holding his arm in a 'sling' made me think it was a shoulder/collarbone or maybe elbow. Anyway, he came back on the ground so I think we can assume he's OK.

He was definitely holding his hand - maybe a dislocated finger? No way he would have come back on if it was anything worse than that.

I'm thinking dislocated finger in the marking contest

Just on Jamo .......when was the report laid? From my memory no free kick was given by the umps so if it was a reportable incident why didn't the Crows get a free kick. Secondly the HUN this morning was saying he had been reported .....was the report laid by the video review panel? If so did they do a review of the whole match last night?

A good assessment Jim but I cant agree on Warnock. I thought his ruckwork was average and he seemed more intent on avoiding contact than feeding his on ballers. Scott Thompson sharked 75% of his hitouts. I thought Hampson won more ball in the middle and provided more mobility and physical presence around the stoppages.
A big step up from Hammer IMO.

I thought both our rucks struggled in the ruck - though perhaps I'm just used to seeing clear taps to advantage from jacobs :(

Good to see hampson stick a couple of contested marks though - you could hear the crowd go up everytime one of them stuck :)

Missed the 1st 1/4 but from what I saw

positives
hampson - taking contested marks
yarran - cant wait to see what he does in the regular season - if you dont have him in your dream teams and what not then you are nuts. Cant wait till he gets a full tank (elite fitness/15+beep)
garlett - classy & dangerous as usual
waite - looked dangerous at times without really dominating
robinson - love his desperation. Created a goal from a desperate dive into the pack to extract the ball in the second (might have been waites snap?). I'd have him in my 22 for rd 1 - instant impact player
gibbs - has been quiet this preseason - I dont think he is really pushing himself as yet (perhaps as some have pointed out he is under instructions?)
simon white - no specfics but he always seems to do one or two nice things that leave me with a good impression of him on the day - and I'm quite sure its more than the kouta number...
collins - liked what I saw of him - obviously not as big as grigg but looks to be a more dangerous player (especially around goals!)

negatives
nuff nuffs in the crowd - was sitting behind the interchange area in the 3rd and some wanker yelled to bower that there is always next year when he was coming off with what looked to be an injury (assisted, arm held in a jumper sling).
my eyes - I need glasses :( - was struggling to pick up players at the other end of the field and could hear some guys behind me chatting about the various players involved in the play. Turned around and it was a couple of old blokes (50+) who obviously had better eyesight than mine :( - on the brightside, I've got time to get my glasses done before the season opener

81–82 premiership teams went pretty ordinary in the pre–season...

If we're having an ordinary pre-season then god help the competition.

A win over Geelong would cap off a great pre-season IMO.

Winning habit - Tick
Plenty of players given opportunity - Tick
Game plans tested and tweaked - Tick
No major injuries to note (touch wood) - Tick

8pts on the board before the real season begins

Amazed that there are some that seem to think our pre-season is only so-so.From what i have seen i reckon we are motoring beautifully.Everyone from the seasoned campaigners to the newbies seem to be putting there hands up which is fantastic.Dont know if i'm imagining things, but i get the feeling that this years crop of recruits just seem really good and are not one little bit overawed by being on an AFL list. They dont skirt around the fringe and spectate, they go in very hard and seem extremely eager to make there presence felt. They are not here just to make up the numbers.
CAZZ ,could you elaborate on these new guys ? am i getting carried away,or are this new lot very gutsy and ambitious who want to make there mark right now ?

Anyhow, geting onto the Crows match, thought Warnock and Hammer were superb. As far as im concerned,Ratts MUST come up with a formula to include Warnock,Hammer, and the big "K" in the one side.Dont think it would be inbalanced,in fact i think if he gets on the front foot it would create an imbalance in the opposition.
What the hell has hapenned to Yarran over the summer ? he looks a completely differant player to me.I have not been a fan of Yarrans up to this point, but if he plays like that in the future i will be a convert.Never questioned his ability, just couldnt cop his laconic style. To me he is a mini Fev.Brilliant beyond belief sometimes, and exasperating beyond belief at other times.
Reckon Gibbs is only going half pace if that.Last bloke to worry about. He will fire when he has to.Not convinced he ever will make a midfielder.Woont matter coz off that HBF he is Bruce Doull like and sets up so many forward thrusts i would be more than happy to have him anchored off the HBF.

Getting back to our pre-season............as all i will say is i have seen plenty of worse pre-seasons than this one.Witnessed some real shockers over the years. In fact the only thing worrying me is that most of the good sides of the past were pretty deplorable in there leadups. They always saved it for the real thing. So,if anything,i hope Ratts pulls 'em back a cog or two.

Mickstar agree with a lot of you have said, never been a real fan of using pre-season as an indicator but there are good signs.

I with ny brother and a few mates watching the game on Friday and the general comment was on the strength of the list. Its come a long way from the days when you had at least 6 players on your list that no other club would touch. You look at our rookies and you cant help but be impressed with the way they are going, looks like we are getting that part right.

Good points on Gibbs - but I like him in the midfield so he can use the ball fwd of the centre and hurt the opposition. You maybe right that he is going to be the captain of defence off HBF, possibly the Peter Motley type that we cruelly lost??

Yarran i started liking last year as a player, but in his first year I seriously thought we buggered that one up by letting Rich slip through. Ian Stewart I never saw, but one of ny junior coaches many moons ago tried to get it into our heads that high stats alone isnt good enough. He said get half as many but use all and it will benefit the team more. He was comparing Ian Stewart with Terry Wallace, 2 gun centremen. He said Plough racked up 30+ touches but gave half back to the opposition, he said Stewart may have got 20, but those 20 hurt the opposition. I am not saying Yarran will win 3 brownlows and play in a couple of flags, BUT what I am saying is taht the skill level he has is obscene!! He makes footy look easy and kicking the ball is so, so easy!!!

Playing Special K, Warnock and Hammer in the one side comes back to one person; Hammer. He needs to show that the 3 in one side can work, i see the other two as monty's to be selected. Hammer must start clunking a few big grabs a game, like he did in the last quarter in the goalsquare against the Crows. Hopefully confidence will grow and he will start to take the game on this year.

I also think we have traded well with young Collins and Laidler, they both look handy types at this point in time.

Just a few observations/comments from yesterday:

* The 3 players who brought a smile to my face yesterday were Yarran, Hammer & Duigan. Yarran looks a million bucks at the moment. His run out of defence and ball use was first class. Hammer carried the can in the ruck in the 2nd half after Warnock went off early in the 3rd term. I think Warnock might have suffered a minor injury and was kept off the ground for the rest of the 2nd half as a precaution (by the way, I thought Warnock was fairly dominant in the ruck in the 1st half - made one or two clangers with the ball, but he controlled the ruck contests well). We've been saying for a few years now that Hammer will be handful if/when the marks start sticking...well, he clunked a few beauties yesterday and his workrate was excellent. And Duigan....looked very determined to have an impact yesterday (obviously fighting for a spot in the Rd 1 team + I suspect he wanted to prove a point to the Crows...) and I think those that compare him to Andrew McKay are pretty close to the mark. Time will tell if he gets to the AA level that Macca did, be he certainly seems a similar type player to Macca. Pencil him in for Round 1 now.

* Bower appeared to injury his shoulder (or perhaps elbow?) early in the last quarter. It didn't look good when he came off (he looked distressed and was holding his arm in his jumper like something was seriously wrong), but he made it back on the ground late in the quarter, much to my relief. If we'd lost both he and Jamo (unfortunately, I think Jamo will get at least a week because the AFL won't like the photo in today's paper of the Crows' player's eyes rolling into the back of his head :banghead: ), that would have been very bad for us...

* Although T-Bird did OK, I think we'll look a better side with Hendo at CHF (not to mention Kreuzer running around midfield/attack  ).

* Tex looked to me like he was either carrying a minor niggle or was holding himself back a little bit.

* Newbies Curnow, Laidler and Collins all showed a bit. Curnow's kicking worries me though. Collins looks a bit like Hoops (but doesn't move as smoothly or appear as laconic). Laidler and Watson (who didn't play yesterday) are probably competing for the same spot and I'd say Laidler will get the first opportunity early in the season.

* Murph didn't reappear after half time, hopefully there's nothing more to that than he was given a rest. And I would feel reassured if someone can confirm that JR will be back next week... :?

In regards to Thornton. If he could hold down CHF, at least reasonably well and he's shown thus far he can, albeit under pre-season conditions, would it be a stretch to put Henderson to CHB, where's he played some good footy for Brisbane? It would plug a huge hole.

Jim I reckon we woudl be asking too much from Thornton to be our CHF, most seem to acknowledge that T-Bird as a defender was preferred as the third defender (this is despit ehim playing some really good footy as KPP down back).

As a fwd, he could pinch hit as a CHF, but would be best suited as the third marking option.

His game on Friday was good in this role, particulraily the first and third quarters.

i was thinking a 3rd tall defender could be a 2nd tall KPF given you're not have to mind some big, power forward. You're leading someone to the ball rather being led there. On a gains/loss situation we might gain more anyway by having a KPD spot plugged with someone like Henderson. Would stiffen a huge weakness without losing that much in attack. Be temporary until the draft picks develop.

Can always revert if it doesn't work that well.

Just a thought.

Shit,i knew i forget something............Thornton.Thought he played really well against the Crows.Far from washed-up as a senior player IMHO.Reckon Thornton provides a terrific versatile option.Got plenty to offer as far as i'm concerned.Fully aware you cant play 'em all Bomba, but reckon Thornton will be more than handy to have around the place.Wont play 22games,but will get plenty of game time in the one's.Far too good for the Ants.

With question marks over Hendo & Carlos & Kreuzer coming into Round 1, I think T-Bird is a good chance to play forward against Richmond. He's a smart player, decent mark and good kick. We could do a lot worse.

But in the medium to long term, I think we definitely want Waite, Hendo & Kreuzer/Hammer/206 (+ possibly Levi/Mitchell/Bray) as our marking targets.

Not sure where that leaves T-Bird. I think to have a future at Carlton beyond 2011 he needs to re-establish himself as a defender. And that could still happen if Jamo and Bower keep going backwards, and Austin or White don't step up...

Over the next few years while we develop the likes of Watson, McCarthy, McInnes and Dare we really need at least 2 out of Jamo, Bower, Laidler, Austin, White and T-Bird to emerge as consistent and reliable tall defenders. Jamo & Bower deserve to start the season as our two best, but with question marks next to them both, T-Bird's career at Carlton still has a pulse, IMO.

Don't want Thornton anywhere near our backline. Can't see Ratts lasting the year if he is getting regular game time in our backline.

For the first time we have real competition for spots. Throughout last year we played out of form players because we had to. We prematurely brought back into the side Waite and Bower shattering their confidence, I felt Jamo was lucky not to get dropped along with Joseph and Carrots.

Now we have Laidler Duigan and Watson putting their hand up to play in defence. I look forward to Kreuzer's return to strengthen our midfield
and Collins, Kerr and Walker as additional forward options. This is our strongest team on paper since we lost our ageing stars to retirement back in 2000-2001. The quality is there, now it is up to Ratts. Feeling very optimistic.

Good call ABNS
I am a big Hendo fan but dont think he will get up for first match - he would be first choice as CHF
Thorton was very good on Friday at CHF took some really good marks and a fine kick -a good competitor - we could do worse than have him at chf against richmond
I think he is a very versatile player and maybe a bit of a swingman in the later stages of his career- no doubt if Jamo is outed there will be consideration him playing full back in round 1 as well

I THINK HE GETS A BUM RAP sometimes in here -never a superstar but a fine warrior for the football club who hs shown real guts since he first played at 17 -off the rookie list and was the mainstay of possibly the worse carlton backline OF THE MODERN ERA

Agree with Mick a good pre-season considering -it wasnt that many years ago when we went to a pre-season match against port at PP and got beaten by over 100 -knew the season was going to be abysmal in early March

Agreed, I think he's in trouble. There was nothing wrong with the shepherd technically, he did all the correct things. But the AFL has made it clear, you hit the head, you have a holiday. No amount of scientific justification will change this.

He hit the guy in the chest, and bending down into the movement only exposes his head to contact. He didn't hit the head on initial contact, and Henderson's head then snapped into him after that initial blow. That's not head high contact in the sense of a reportable offence. It's an unfortunate accident. Next you'll think blokes who get a concussion on landing are automatically deserving of head high frees.

And also, the only level left is for Murphy to elevate himself to one of the best players in the comp (ie. top 10). He already shreds teams regularly.

+2 (meaning I agree with both points)
And for those concerned about the form of blokes like Gibbs and Murphy ... it's only a practise match guys. Personally
I don't give a toss what those guys do until Rnd 1.
