Yes Port has been performing better than Carlton since Hinkley and Malthouse took over their respective clubs at the end of 2012.

And its all due to Port getting 3 million dollars in assistance per year for 3 years.

Yes that must be it....

(incidentally the equalisation fund comes from normal consolidated AFL revenue. That is, every club contributes to it, but not every club receives assistance. Personally I am more angry at the 1 million dollar salary cap perk that the Swans receive, all because coffee is 90 cents more expensive in harbour town than it is in Adelaide. And little winks here and there to get player and coaching deals down for Sydney - see recent Buddy and Tippett deals. And in order for the AFL to execute these little AFL house advantages for the Swans, the Swans are given an extra 1 million in their salary cap - enormous advantage over the rest of the competition that is totally fabricated - deliberately!)

A hypothetical question,
What would we have to give up to get,
1. Tom Mitchell
2. Kristian Jaksch
Not sure we will or can land both but what are people's thoughts on these two players..
Do we lose our first two picks for them??
Do we offer players??
Are these players worth chasing??
Straight swap, Robinson for Jaksch??
Can our second rounder land us Mitchell??
What are people's thoughts on Tim Membrey??
Is he worth chasing??
Mitch Clark is an interesting one, can play but is he over he's health issues?? Maybe uncle Mick can help/guide him back to he's best footy??? Health comes first...
Interesting times ahead, bring on trade week....

* Tom Mitchell slim chance. You don't part with pick 6 for him however.
* Kristian Jaksch big chance. 2nd rounder and player I'd do.
* Membrey I'd go for but I wouldn't give up much. Swap of picks included perhaps.

Alternatively another question is - should Carlton pay money towards an equalisation fund that assists St Kilda, North Melbourne, Port and Melbourne?

2. Yes. They should. But your question should be 'how much should Carlton pay...' Because essentially, all clubs - for some time now have agreed to handouts from the future fund and now an equalisation fund. Sure some eyebrows were raised - but the overall consensus has been that the AFL is one of the world’s least-equalised sporting competitions.

tap...it's worth noting point 4 from the competitive balance measures.

6. Stronger accountability and performance management – help smaller Clubs which benefit from increased distributions from the AFL to improve performance, grow revenues and to be accountable for delivering on key targets.

The only thing Carlton need concern itself with is itself.

I understand where you are coming from, but I think we should be able to analyse/question/gather information on how these funds are distributed. At present, the AFL isn't questioned by journalists or anyone for that matter on why/how much they give to certain clubs. It is just assumed that they are handing out these funds in an equitable manner.

Who decides what is "equitable" and why? I see and hear a lot about "equitability" but not much of it is directed in Carlton's way. I hope hand outs aren't judged just on revenue - surely it should be judged on other factors as well such as the performance of teams. eg if a certain team has not played in a preliminary final since 2000 perhaps it is wise to hold off taxing them at the higher rate for a while.

For example, I have gone through the AFL annual reports and have found that Hawthorn has received extra money from this future fund/equalisation fund...why ? on what grounds? How do we get this information or do we just assume it was justified? Where are the journalists asking these questions?

This one - the "continued Supplemental / Discretionary funds, which compensate smaller clubs for structural inequities" – - I would like to see greater disclosure from the AFL on how this operates..If the AFL was a private company -keep it hidden, but the AFL's stakeholders are primarily their fans. They have the right to know.

Then there is this one - funds are given to clubs to help "grow revenues". Surely Carlton should be given funds from the AFL in regards to this one. Carlton is technically the 2nd most supported club in the league but is about 6th or whatever on the membership table. How about the AFL divert some funds to the Carlton's membership/marketing department. Let's see the AFL help this club "grow revenues"...or perhaps Carlton doesn't really matter to AFL management?

Why on Earth would Sydney want Robbo? He'd struggle to get a game in their 2's.

gotta love the kids attitude to training, sure he's a little daft but should that really be the tipping point?? i think mitch is being punished as harshly as any player who's ever slipped up before, possiby moreso

You talking about the white-haired guy who shakes his fist during the team song? Is he just a random supporter? I assumed he was like a doctor or something. Irritates me like Bruce Reid irritates me, which probably makes me ageist.

Not really. He's just not that good of a footballer. So his negatives outweighed his positives.

Because it happens at least twice a year every year for the past 5? Let's not confuse the tipping point with a first offence here.

Robbo to Gold Coast for their compo pick. That pick goes to swans for Mitchell.. Think pick 20ish.
Our second rounder goes to GWS for Jaksch.
Try and get a pick in the 30ths for Garlett.
Pick 6 to the best available, most likely a mid..
All of a sudden we add,
2 more quality mids and a quality KPP and add Cripps in, things looking better already..
We lose, robbo and a second rounder..
