Cheap shot at someone like me hey Synbad. Well heres my contribution for the year.

I was at a dinner party last night and sat next to a guidance Counciller who spends most of here time helping younger players adapt to Life in the AFL. She used to follow Carlton but now hates them with a passion.
Want to know why . She spends half her time trying to get the players paid and she says that Carlton is by far the worst club for paying their players and this was the major contributing factor to the on feild performance and the lack of interest of players comming to the club.

She said all clubs were guilty of it but we were the worse - Started in the elliott days and has progressively gotten worse over the years.

i didn't know her from Adam - She could have been talking Crap . But it was an interesting conversation any way and it could have some merit.

Well you were sitting down (on your arse i presume) along side of the guidance councillor.. ... thats what you said wasnt it???
................and then your post turned into a bit of a moan....

But thanks anyway...

Did you get her name by any chance????
We should need to check your source out.. your big on asking for sources...

Whatever gave you the idea i was tossing you into that group Sydney??? :P

Sydney i dont doubt you....i know you probably got that and it might be true..

But does she really counsel every player from every club and knows how each club pays???

Ive heard Melbourne were shithouse payers... extremely shithouse but ive never heard we were..

Not to say it isnt true....

She claims she talks to all new recruits particually the ones that move from interstate to make sure there adjusting properly and are being looked after by the clubs. Things have apparently gotten worse since the introduction of the draft and clubs seem less inclined these days to make sure players are prepared for life after football.
She said most clubs were bad but we were by far the worse and the most difficult to deal with.

Look.. i think most clubs are unprofessional.. and were at the bottom 3 or 4 of those.
We dont understand aboriginals...I mean fancy not giving Betts his extra 4k for being an interstate kid when we went and plucked him from Kalgoorlie...Yes i know he was living here for 2 odd years... IN A BOARDINGHOUSE ON AN INDIGENOUS PLAYER SCHOLARSHIP!!!..

There are a heap of things we can do to become more professional and move with the times...

.. and that goes for alot of other club too.

This club is living in the past.... and it goes for alot of us the supporters too....
We need change!!!... we need an influx of modern thinkers

We tell ourselves its the most elite sporting set up in the land .. but AFL is miles behind whats going on elsewhere in the world....

I think a lot of people think that the AFL is all glamour and fame but that is only for a select few. There must be hundreds on players who never even get to 20 games . These blokes choose the AFL for their carreer and when it all goes pear shape there must be a lot of screwed up kids running around. I think the system doesn't help. Address the system then they will go a long way to catching up with the rest of Society.

Mind you they are better than most sporting codes in Australia

Look, players have a certain responsibility to themselves also.
The club can lead them to water.....

though i truly believe that AFL clubs are run in a VERY amateur manner....

I've just read this post and agree with what you say except for one thing.

I'll never understand how Andrew Lovett played 3 games with the Carlton Reserves from Northern U18's, and played well enough to be told that Shane O would contact him with a view of selecting him in the Rookie draft.

Guess what?....no one called him, so he eventually ended up playing a season with East Perth, before Essendon* snapped him up in the 2004 Rookie Draft and pretty quickly promoted him to the senior list where he is now a regular star.

Just to think that we had him....and let him go....

Having been involved in a junior football club for a period of time, I can tell you there are a lot of screwed up kids, screwed up parents telling their screwed up kids how good they are, a lot of screwed up parents having "discussions" with coaches to play "Little Johnny" at CHF because the talent scouts are more likely to notice them there - this is at Under 12 level mind you  .

Your assessment may well be right Synbad, but I'm not sure that the Betts example supports you.

The salaries and conditions of 1st year players are set out in the CBA. They are not minimum conditions - a club is not allowed to pay more than is prescribed*. There was some doubt about whether Betts was an interstate recruit who was entitled to receive a relocation allowance or not. If Carlton had paid him it, and the AFL subsequently classified him as a Victorian recruit, the AFL may have penalised us for making an illegal payment. By notifying a grievance, the club and Betts were protected from any retrospective decision regarding his status.

For all we know, Carlton wanted to pay him the allowance and supported his entitlement to it before the Grievance Tribunal.

Does anyone know that the Grievance Tribunal decided? It may have ruled in his favour.

* You might remember that Murphy was offered a lucrative deal by Brisbane to sign up as a father/son pick. But this doesn't contradict my point. Brisbane offered a 5 year deal. It included only the prescribed payments for a 3rd round draft pick who would be an interstate recruit, but then provided lucrative conditions for the remaining 3 years of the contract.
