As we have only one Veteran on the list - Kouta - and we have a full complement of 5 rookies at the close of the rookie draft, then shouldn't we be able to nominate 1 of the rookies as a "Nominated Rookie"? That rookie would be available for senior selection without needing to wait for a long-term injury.

One of the more famous "nominated rookies" of recent times was Aaron Davey who played seniors while on the rookie list for essentially the whole of his first year.

Watched a bit of Smith in the magoos last season.Goes in very, very hard for the footy and that wins me every time.Very ferocious attack on the pill. But apart from that inside stuff,he actually covers a huge amount of territory.Must wrack big K's.Travels so far and wide he was nicknamed ROADDOG by our pal Phoenix J.
On a cautionary note,a bit one paced.Lacks a bit of breakaway speed. But more than earnt his rookie spot and definately in the running for a promotion.

We only need them to be ONE paced. As long as it's really fast....

Slightly off topic, but what a crap game AFL is becoming if a hard-at-it ballwinning midfielder struggles to get on a list just because he doesn't have breakaway speed.

It used to be that all body-types could rise to the top in our game, provided the skill and/or desire was there. Now you need your parents to gift you fast-twitch muscle fibres. If I wanna watch athletes, I'll go see track&field meets.

No doubt about it - rookies can play.

But it is hard to fit 44 players into the 24 man team as we found out at the start of this year. If you don't have a lot of senior players carrying injuries, and you want to play some of the younger senior-listed players such as Russell, Hartlett, Blackwell, Setanta, Murphy and perhaps Raso, there aren't that many opportunities for the rookies.

Unless of course your smart like Sydney and rest your stars and play only your rookies, kids and fringe players.

No we have our full complement of 38 players on our primary list. So we can't promote any of our 5 rookies unless we have a LTI.

As I understand it Melbourne had 37 players on their primary list when Aaron Davey was a rookie player. They just didn't have enough cash to pay for a 38th player. Finally they found the money and then was able to promote Aaron.

Setanta was promoted because Fisher had already been placed on the LTI list.

i think you are wrong you can have 38 players on your list plus 2 veterans and if you only have one veteran you can promte a rookie

hope that helps

I'm pretty sure that Davey was a "nominated rookie" when he played in the seniors, Malleefowl. They did have to raise some money as nominated rookies are entitled to a higher base payment. Once they were able to afford it, they nominated him to the AFL and he was eligible to play immediately.

These articles from the AFL site prove this:
Quote:
It has been a whirlwind three months for the 20-year-old Demon. Overlooked at the National's AFL Draft, Davey was selection number three in the National's AFL Rookie Draft in December. Two weeks ago he was nominated as a rookie eligible to play on the senior list after an impressive preseason. Davey will be able to stay on the senior list regardless of injuries or delistings, as Melbourne has a senior list of 38 players with no veterans.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement provides as follows:
Quote:
14.5 An AFL Club is eligible to nominate a Rookie Player as being eligible for senior selection if it has 38 Players on its Primary List not including Veterans at the conclusion of the Pre-Season Draft and it otherwise satisfies the requirements of this clause 14.
14.6 An AFL Club which is eligible to nominate a Rookie Player pursuant to clause 14.5 may:
(a) where the AFL Club has nominated one Player on its Veterans List,
nominate one Player from its Rookie List as being available for selection by that AFL Club for AFL Premiership Season Matches and AFL Finals Series Matches; and
(b) where the AFL Club has not nominated a Player on its Veterans List, nominate up to two Players from its Rookie List as being available for selection by the AFL Club for AFL Premiership Season Matches and AFL Finals Series Matches.

From where I stand, we fit neatly into sub-clause 14.6(a), so we have a right to nominate one rookie for senior selection. Anyone disagree?

Thanks SOS. You remind me of a poster named mav...

It's only the sixth time we've had the nominated rookie debate, too. Hope that one clears it up : )

Ok, so we’re allowed a nominated rookie.
A hypothetical question.
Say we declare Jessie as a nominated rookie and he is eligible to play senior footy. If say Barney or McLaren goes down with a 10 week “Long Term Injuryâ€

I think jesse will be fine on the rookie list this season - he hasnt consistently dominated the twos yet, like bentick has done, and blackers to some extent towards the end of the season.

I would like to see jesse have a dominating season for the bullants this season, playing most of the time on the ball hopefully, he was starved of opportunities for awhile in the twos, and had to play off the bench at times.

I think blackers and jesse will be fighting for the same position in the ones over the next few years, muprhy of course will be ahead of them!!! hopefully!!

I dont think we should expect jesse in the ones this season, but i agree with the sentiment that he has potential to be a very solid midfielder, espceially if he works on his speed and fitness, which it appears he is doing.

i admire your loyalty to hoops frank - he is a tough one to defend at times, but i think everyone agrees he has skill, its only the second efforts, or lack of, that concern most of us. I hope we see tough hoola as much as possible this season!
