Longmire would be a good head coach, as would Hinkley , Buckley , Simpson and yes I know there’ll be noise Hired, I reckon.
As individuals everyone has his or her thoughts and plenty will be expounded in the coming weeks.
It will be for the the expert decide.
Messers Wright and Davis must make the correct decision, the pendulum is swinging and the aspiration of many with it.

how much energy at his age does he have left? how in tune with the modern game is he? much has changed since he left the game, and so much has changed since he won his only gf in '12.

Yep

We need a coach that has been in the system for a while but assistants that complement him
In personality and footy strengths and weaknesses

Not an old coach
And no interference from Greg Williams

Foolishly, perhaps, I'm happy to put faith in the process that Wright and Davies will run. Everyone keeps telling us how they're great footy people and know what they're doing. They're certainly much better equipped than me, that's for sure, haha.

I don't expect they'll land on someone like Longmire, or anyone else who has been a senior coach, but if they do, then so be it. There will be good reasons for whatever decision they make.

Whateley said it well on AFL360 last night, just go and get the best coach for us. We have to trust that GW/CD will do everything required to work out who that is and back them all in once the decision is made.

I don't think having previous AFL level coaching experience (or even coaching to a premiership) makes any difference. It all depends on the right fit for the club, culture, politics, and playing list. So we should give no weight to any previous, successful, AFL coaching experience.

The game evolves, and the best teams are one step ahead in that evolution.

Get the best coach.

Like camel said, Messrs GW and CD are better equipped than me and will surround themselves with better sounding boards than Keyboard warriors we are.

Players selected teague. That worked well.
The Board selected Voss over Kingsley. That worked well.
Now lets play this game properly, with proper due diligence. We have plenty of time.

The world is our oyster.

Lets get this next appointment right.

I'm debating in my head the pros and cons for Experienced coach vs a Coach in the waiting/ Head Assistant coaches for the Carlton role as Head Coach.

Just got off the phone praising and welcoming the prospect of Longmire, if its decided he's our man and in the same breath sund the praises of Assistant coaches who have done the hard yards of experience and have their own evolved game plan: the next big thing.

What really stands out to me is most Senior Assistant coaches do have a lot of footy coaching experience, and exposure to the great coaches. This exposure helps work out what works and what doesn't for them, and what type of list he would need to make his Game Plan a standout success.

McCrae for instance, came from left field in the race for Collingwood Coach and replaced Buckley. He was a no name but you can see below he had travelled a long football journey and a wealth of experience:

1995-2004 Brisbane Player under Walls (1 years) and Northey (3 years) Matthews (6 years for 3 Flags)
2007-2009 Richmond (2 years) under Wallace as Development and Assistant coach, and VFL Coach under Caretaker coach Rawlings (1 year)
2010.........Brisbane under Voss (1 year) as Assistant coach
2011-2016 Collingwood under Malthouse (1 year) and Buckley (5 years)
2017-2020 Richmond under Hardwick (4 years for 2 Gfs 1 Flag)
2021.........Hawthorn under Clarkson (1 year)

2022- Present HEAD COACH for 1 flag

Experience is experience, and what I keep hearing from Head Coaches, isyou learn the role whilst on the job, that "nothing prepares you for the Top Job' but I think preparedness for the Head Coach role is from a decent Apprenticeship.

I say, interview every experienced coach willing to throw their name in the ring, listen to what they say, what they have to offer and what they think of our list and the gaps in the list for their Game plan, and perhaps any targets they think they could get us, and do the same with every good Assistant Coach in the market for this important role at a Big 4 club, with a core group and a couple gapes to fill to move us forward. Assistants have relationships with players just as Head Coaches do; maybe better stronger relationships than Head coaches.

The runway is clear. May the Best Coach win.

I was just talking to a work colleague from Perth who's a WCE member. Adam Simpson was mentioned and he said don't go near him, he's crap. I said, even though he got you a flag? He replied that Simpson had almost nothing to do with it, it was all Mitchell. Then he described how he'd been at a game, sitting near the dug-out, and saw Mitchell shouting and waving at a ~30yo Shuey to move 15m this way or that way. A few seconds later the ball fell in Shuey's lap and it led to a goal. My colleague said this was a regular occurrence: Mitchell running the show and revolutionising the midfield. Knew once Hawthorn poached him that the Simpson era was doomed.

Has anyone who regularly sits near dug-outs witnessed any assistant coaches with these qualities? Cause that's what I want in our next head coach. No more excuses about "he's not a tactician, but...".

Not surprised about Mitchell, but surprised Simmo wasnt highly regarded. Thanks GE. I'll put that one in the memory bank.

Mitchell was the onfield coach during Hawks golden era. Hence, Premiership Clarkson moved on to avoid losing Mitchell to another club.

What i dont want to do is try and talk Longmire, Hinkley, Simpson or whoever into coaching after they decided they didnt want to.

They may not have the hunger and desire and possibly in the moment seeking a sugar hit or being the main man, at a big club on big dollars.

Only to cruise his way through and we are having to replace him in a few years time.

Longmire may be the best option for us, but long term. Is he? Does he really want to keep coaching? Why did he stop in the first place?

i want someone who has been an apprentice for a very long time in a successful system. With a very high football brain and good with people. And really really wants a top job.

Is that too much to ask ? Im sure Voss was in this boat, however he was sacked and many players left because of him. Funnily same thing happened here, and its well known he didnt have a good tactical brain. Dont want someone who is not good on game day.

I sure hope we get it right this time. No short cuts on money, or process.

Buckley is the ex-coach that intrigues me the most.

He's hungry. He still wants it. You can see it in him.

Whether he's the best man for the job, that's up to GW and CD, I've got no idea. I dare say GW wouldn't be a fan, given he's already gotten rid of him once.

It would also be hilarious if Buckley finally wins a Premiership at Carlton, of all places.

but only after they stopped seeing him as the messiah????

Hubris is such a great word and I feel carlton supporters still havent understood how they contribute to carlton's.
Take my brother...please take my brother...still wants the messiah player, the messiah coach...sees out list as better than everyone's and expects to win the fklag every @#$%&! year...and he isn't unusual...so many arguments I've had over the past 25 odd (I mean when can we get an even year) years about how we always this everything will be solved when we get this player or that coach...

I'm 100% with you on this.
Carlton supporters have made themselves so easily marketed to by the club and then when it doesn't work out so bitter towards it and its individuals.
The whole time not realising that by jumping on board with every new 'messiah' coach, new 'messiah' players etc etc that that becomes the expectation and business revenue opportunity.
If you want to point your finger at the board you may well want to hold up a mirror while you are at it.
We are all guilty of this to some extent with some more so than others.
A lack of success mixed with a nice dose of past entitlement has been one of our bigger issues over the last 30 years.
Until that changes we may well not.

Firstly, I doubt he would work with GW again given he was the one who moved him on.
Secondly, we just got rid of a second time coach just to add another?
No thanks.

If we want to give ourselves the best chance for success then we need to bring in a new coach from a current successful system that understands the way the game is evolving and have some ideas on how it will progress.
Plus a past 'messiah' coach playing the Mark Williams role, mentoring and being a sounding board on game day in the coaches box.
But that alone won't be enough as we will still need on field leaders and ex premiership ones should be first on the list.

Imagine if not only did Buckley win a flag at Carlton but Naicos also won a Brownlow at Tassie.

Also a year at the ultra professional Cats, where they play a modern game style, has to add to his skill set.

He's only 53 and as you say BB, he looks very keen to get back into it.

I hear what you're both saying, I mentioned it in my post too.

But as Cazz said, he's been at the cats learning their system. I'm sure he's added a few strings to his bow since he left Collingwood, even before he joined the cats. He hasn't been at home "rejuvenating", or whatever the other ex-coaches have been doing. He's been studying, working, getting better.

Does that mean I think he will get the job? No. But I dare say we will take a serious look at him, should he put his hand up. Even GW will probably be keen to see if he's a different coach than he was three years ago.

I get what you are saying also, but the Geelong system is not as good as most like to paint it IMO, but it is a stable system built on consistency.
Our playing list profiles are worlds apart and we require some serious forward thinking, so not sure if that is Buckley.
I don't rate Scott as a coach either, he just been lucky enough to get a ton of assistance from the AFL and have the Geelong factor to get great talent for SFA.
Cartlon on the other hand has been the AFLs kicking toy for the better part of 30 years.
