Sorry Firearm Fevs - Lance was beaten by Charlie Gardner. Has anyone else in the competition ever been beaten by Charlie Gardner? Ummm.... might have to phone a friend, but I'd be doubtful.
And to make matters worse, O'Hailpin actually showed Lance how to play Centre Half Forward too. Its all about running, leading and contesting. Lance may know this, but he very rarely shows it. Took a bloke in his third season of football to demonstrate it to him.
That number 14 pick (or whatever Melbourne would have offered for him) would have done us just fine.

My point is that if Lance gets injured, so does our competative streak....

Without Lance we would of been pumped on Saturday.

If he was so important to our overall structure, then why was the club hawking him around the traps during trade-week ?? He is only treading water at Carlton in 2006, we can't afford to have him at the club if all we can get out of him is to play the mop-up role in defence.

Personally I think if the way Lance played on Saturday night is considered to be the lynchpin in what is keeping us afloat this season, it just highlights how far we have sunk as a team, and so have our expectations as supporters.

Surely our memories haven't been dulled so much by the last few seasons that we have forgotten what good, hard, accountable football is?

I never said Lance had the best game he's ever played.

What i am trying to say is that without Lance we would of been in seriouse trouble, and i don't think taking any other player away would hurt as much....I honestly believe he is seriousely undervalued.

Molly i don't think Santy will ever teach Lance anything about CHF (remember lance played that position in a powerful team at a young age..)

Is Lance overpaid for what he does? Yes
Is Lance a real defender who can negate a class Key Position forward? No
Is Lance necessary down back considering our weak defense? Yes
Is he necessary up forward or even helpful at this point? No

He would be fantastic if we had two solid key defenders who could take the tall forwards and regulary beat them. That we don't have those isn't Lance's fault, and we can't blame him for his slow speed and lack of height. He's never going to be Matthew Scarlett. He's at his best in defense when he's playing Teagues role (which is probably why Teague's no longer in the side) and what we've got to do now is find those two key position players we need to make our defense solid. Whether the answer to that comes from Thornton, Saddington and Livo, or from our younger kids like Hartlett, Kennedy, Aisake, Bower and Edwards is what we've now got to figure out.

Isn't stating the obvious fun :-D

That is true but i think the point is Whitnall is playing in the easiest position on the field and is getting paid probably just as much as a Scarlett. Last year people say Whitnall had a good season....I think he had an ordinary season, he played without an opponent when back however whille never really hurting the opposition.
In a few years we will have JR and Walker on each flank doing the marking, running and then making the assists.

Lance should of been traded if he is being using 3rd man up.

Being baulked while you're standing still when the guy is hard up against the boundary is embarrassing. The three guys watching the game with me actually laughed out loud. I simply shook my head.

I agree the Baulk on Lance didnt look good but hey it happens in Footy and as i have seen and so have a few others Lance did well in the 2nd and 3rd But i guess its easier to point out some single incidents rather than some of the positive actions done

hell i saw more probs with players bringing the ball out of defence .. turnover quickly goes back into our forward line when the defence is out of position expecting the ball to get past midfiled and results in a cats goal.

there where plenty of errors made by many players equally on the Cats sidei noticed also.

Anyway my comment about the Baulk was that it happens many times in a game .. Cripes Blackers did a great baulk through traffic was well done

Your in for a treat then...it should be a regular occurrence down in our backline...just look for the opposing no name CHF...noticed J Brown had the lazy 12 marks and 8 goals in some QAFL game of 20 minute halves...he shouldnt be a problem though for our crack CHB should he?

I think that in another 12 months Hartlett, Kennedy and Bower are all going to be huge units. When that happens, we are going to have a lot more options as to how we arrange our forward and back 50s.

Until then, as the original poster said, Lance is pretty cruical to our back 6 and if he goes down in the first month it's going to be another long season.

Some of you are talking like it was Lance, not T-bird, who had 7 goals kicked on him on Sat.
