Geezus!!
We have one group saying there's little difference in the quality of kids from 1-8 so we should win games; and then we have another saying winning means nothing and we should tank to get the best kid possible even if he isn't much different from the next!
WTF?? Maybe that's why Pagan's confused?
I think your misunderstanding what people are saying Nick.
There is not a lot of difference between a group of players at the momenmt to pick from. That might change kater on but at the moment its pretty close. So pick 1 or pick 3 is not a lot of gap.
But some on this forum want the extra pick that winning 4 games or less will bring. That would mean an extra 2nd round pick taken before everyone elses 2nd round pick. Perhaps if we qualify foir that we can argue that our draw last year was irrelevent and we should qualify for 4 wins or less 2 years in a row and therefore a 1st round priority pick.
That would mean for example pick 1 , 17 , 18.
and if we could argue the draw is irrelevent
pick 1,2,18
My point of view is that I want the kids on the list to develop as much as possible. That doesnot mean play all of them at once or play kids in the AFL who are not ready. But faced with an inform, fit physically ready kid like Jordan Russell or keeping David Teague in the seniors. Well I go with JR.
I would not play Setanta yet as his form is not there. Edwards is not ready either. Hartlett needs 4 or 5 solid games in the VFL when he is fit again. So will Bower. But Jackson should continue to play VFL and get good ground time. Raso should be looked at for some VFL. Maybe 1 more week in the VFL reserves.
No problem dropping Blackwell back down to get some confidence and bring in Carrazzo and Jordan Russell.
If that means 2 wins or 10 wins I am just trying to give younger players who have earnt there position a go. I would continue to play a couple of the blokes on the fringes if the younger blokes are not in form or there are injuries. Players like Wiggins and Sporn. But I would also try a couple in different positions as well.
I think our kids are coming along okay and dont feel it would be a disaster if we miss out on the 2nd round priority pick. I think we need to squeeze as much out of our young group this year in terms of development. So thats the VFL reserves, VFL and AFL and play them all in positions that are meaningful and develop them. Not put every single young midfielder we have in the back pocket, or to tag, or on the bench or drop them.
Nothing wrong with teaching a kid the defensive side of the game but does everyone need that grounding? No kid under 25 is allowed to play on the ball? How about play some of them on the ball and then see what there defensive side of there game is like then.
Can these players play midfield?
Carrazzo, AW, JR ?
How about we find out for the rest of the year by giving them time in there. Take Kouta, Stevens and Scotland from 90 minutes a game in the midfield and reduce it to 60 and give that 30 minutes to some youngsters to show what they have got.
Then we get a bit if an idea. We ease the load on our senior players who will run the game out better. We are harder to coach against and wear down and we start the process of development.
If that means we win 8 or 3 games I dont know. Its not tanking. Using the same 4 or 5 midfielders all the time is a slow painful ineviatble death. Might seem like your maximising your chances to win. What you get is competitive for the main for half a game and then run right over the top of when those same players can't keep up anymore.
Sound familar in this last year and a half or more?
Then we can get all these threads about how Stevens is pathetic and lets trade him. Play him less in there. Judd gets rested. Kerr starts on the bench. Adelaide are forever roatating there runners. We use the bench the least and rely on the same players over and over.
It is not working. Its narrow minded and lacking in any vision.
I want something done about it. Starting this week.
