You guys must be nuts if you think he is ready for the ruck.

He barely has a grasp on the fundamentals of the game.

Please leave him down back where he can best learn the game with the support of Whitnall & Thornton.

Whats wrong with 1 qrt in the ruck, im not saying make him number 1 ruckman. Hes not ready for AFL but hes playing, its a suggestion, try him in the ruck in defence, what so hard about run at the ball and hit it, is Barnaby French a scientist that he can run and hit the ball and Carlos can't. Whats so hard about Ruck its the easiest thing in the world, u dont have to catch it, kick it or handball it, tap it or smack it.

The problem is ruck is a very independent position. Positioning, reading the play, when to move off your opponent, when to cramp them up, is a very individual facet of our sport. It takes players born into the code playing ruck from the age of 12, until about 24-26 to master.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching Sedanta at the moment. He is visibly improving each game. But I firmly believe that this is due to allowing him to concentrate on relatively few issues at a time. Playing him in 1 area only allows this development.

Cheers.

He wont ever be a ruckman. He's little big bro is a diff story

Carlos should stay in the backline where he can follow someone to the ball and use he's hight and pace to spoil. I think he will become our ruck option in the backline in time

Has he (O'hAilpin) ever played there in his life? Yeah I know everyone wants new things tried but at least let him get something up at VFL level in the ruck, can't throw him in the ruck for the first time ever at the highest possible level.

He played some practice match footy there last year. From the sounds of things he did OK. However, he didn't do much this pre season - much time was spent with Aisake.

Think he needs more time to build his confidence in the backline first. Is making a few handling errors, mainly on the half volley, more related to lack of confidence rather than lack of ability.

In that interview on Triple M two weeks ago Dennis did say that they thought that in the long term Carlos might be an option in the ruck or as a ruckrover. However he did say that he's still learning the game and although he has come a long way there's still a lot for him to learn and they are trying to give him experience and specific issues to work on. I have noticed that on some occasions he seems to get lost on the ground and that's probably because he gets more involved in watching the play than his opponent.

In all his long career at Melbourne Jim Stynes was a "nominal" ruckman he never actually was much of a ruckman particularly in the centre bounces and boundary throw ins, he was really a ruck-rover who was allowed the luxury of running around the ground picking up kicks at will - allowing Steven O'Dwyer the occasional breather.

Carlos will have to make great strides to be a ruckman and perhaps Aisake will have a better chance - prefer to see him given a chance to run from the HB line to take advantage of his athletic ability.

I don't think anyones suggesting he go into the ruck and expect to dominate, and if they are then they need a bit of a check.

He's not getting a whole lot of ground time each game and our ruck rotations aren't setting the world on fire.

Throw the backup role to Carlos, he can learn to be a bit of a utility at 199 cms. Push the ruckmen harder to retain their spot. It might be 30 minutes max of ruck work for the game (7.5 minutes a quarter) and another 60 as a defender or on the wing as the first option out of defense.

He presents flexibility, so offer him a variety of roles.

As long as you communicate to him you are trying him in the position to see rather than expecting him to excel, I hardly think it's going to be a demoralising experience.

Can't vouch for technique, but certainly has the height, leap and mobility to at least 'go' with most opposition rucks. Given our current stocks of Barnaby, McLaren, DeLuca and Prenda are barely breaking even, I'd say that even untried, Setanta warrants time in the ruck.

On top of this, we have several emerging tall defenders 'on the verge' in Hartlett and Bower (plus Thornton.. and Hanson?) all of whom you'd expect to assume that role once they have size (and knock hard enough). Whilst we have 'zero' in the ruck department. In terms of future and development, I'd much prefer to see Bower and/or Hartlett get 'time' in defence and Setanta as a Ruck / Ruck-Rover.

Big irish spent plenty time with Dempsey one on one learning the art of ruck work today at training. Dempsey was with him for more than 45 minutes.
