The journo who wrote that article was full of crap. The numbers quoted were ridiculous. $150K per year? Bull****!!!! How can you believe anything else he wrote when he so obviously and willfully got this wrong?
The disappointing thing about this whole saga though is the fact that we, as the bottom placed club with first pick in the PSD, are are having other clubs trying to poach our players. It should be the other way around (and hopefully is). We should be talking to out of contract players at other clubs and using our 1st pick in the PSD as leverage to get players. Play this game the Hawks are playing. Offering them a better contract and either bring them over or get their club to pay more than what they hoped to. This should not be happening to us.
I do hope the club is playing this game and it is simply that we have not heard anything in the media. The other scenario is that the board and club is so distracted at the moment they have forgotten to do this.
Base figure is 150K plus match payments - this was quoted in the article.
Selective journalism, but Thornton deserves more than that.
If Thornton was in a top 8 side he would have been dropped after the first few rounds this year and had to really struggle to fight his way back into the side.
He had a poor first half of the season and a good second half.
He is not worth the reported 325K Hawthorn is throwing at him.
Hawthorn might be entering 'stage 2' of their rebuilding program which involves paying over the odds for established players.
Lets see what they have to offer, we might be pleasantly surprised, if not the club signs Thornton up to a reasonable contract after trade week. Easy.
Nothing to sweat and panic about.
